About The Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, invites applications for a Rotating Equine Medicine Internship. This position will work under faculty in Equine Medicine. Salary Grade : UC Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be eligible for employment in the U.S. at the time they apply for a position at MSU-CVM. Mississippi State University employs only citizens of the US, Canada, and Mexico, nationals of the US, and aliens authorized to work in the US by the time of commencement of the position.
  • Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (see http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/colleges_accredited/allcolleges.asp) and have passed the NAVLE licensure examination, or a graduate that has completed the entire ECFVG qualification process (see http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp) by the time of the commencement of this position.
  • Interns are required to be USDA NVAP category 2 accredited.
  • Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
  • Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Responsibilities

  • 70% appointment to the Equine Medicine Service, 30% other specialty clinical rotations, with direct supervision and support of 1 of 2 equine-focused DACVIM (LAIM) at any given time.
  • Equal rotation with 1-2 other interns and 3 surgical residents for Emergency Duty, receiving all surgical and medical emergency patients.
  • This position will work with the Equine Medicine faculty to provide care for patients presenting for ongoing medical problems, preventive care, and emergency treatments.
  • They are responsible for ensuring the treatments prescribed by the faculty are carried out accurately and in compliance with standard practices.
  • This position also monitors and responds to status changes of hospitalized patients under their care.
  • They will maintain records of the veterinary care provided and capture associated fees in compliance with standard practices.
  • While on emergency duty, they are responsible for answering call from veterinarians and clients seeking care at the Animal Health Center. They routinely meet clients at the Animal Health Center after hours, including weekends, to provide emergency care to large animals.
  • In the course of the duties in the hospital they are responsible for educating veterinary students on case management decisions, therapies, and techniques.
