About The Position

The Chicago Lighthouse Media Intern will support the Associate Producer in the day-to-day operations of Chicago Lighthouse Media (CLM) and CRIS Radio. This role is ideal for a student, recent graduate or early career young professional interested in media production, audio/video storytelling, accessibility, nonprofit communications, and disability advocacy. Through this position, the Chicago Lighthouse Media intern will gain hands-on experience in storytelling, content creation, production logistics, volunteer coordination, and accessible media practices, while also contributing to The Chicago Lighthouse’s overall storytelling and social media outreach.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in radio production, journalism or other field.
  • Familiarity with Windows 11, Word, Excel, and digital work stations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Clear communication skills and comfort working with volunteers and community members.
  • Interest in disability advocacy, accessible media, or nonprofit communications.
  • Ability to work on-site two days per week.
  • Commitment to our mission of providing opportunities for people who are visually impaired, blind, deaf-blind, otherwise disabled or veterans is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with organizing and tracking volunteer-submitted recordings.
  • Help format, label, and prepare audio files for broadcast.
  • Support quality checks of CRIS Radio streams, call-in lines, and app-based listening platforms.
  • Update and maintain program schedules under the guidance of the Associate Producer.
  • Help prepare materials for volunteer communications, including newsletters or training resources.
  • Assist with research for original content productions, including “The Disability Minute” and other initiatives.
  • Support pre-production tasks such as scheduling interviews, preparing questions, and gathering background information.
  • Help with on-site recording sessions (audio or video), including setup, note-taking, and accessibility considerations.
  • Log and organize audio/video files; assist with captioning, transcription, and metadata.
  • Draft copy for social media, website posts, or partner communications.
  • Help track invoices, subscriptions, and media-related administrative tasks.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions for new content and partnership opportunities.
  • Work with PR and Marketing to promote Chicago Lighthouse Media as disability-focused content producer.
  • Promote Chicago Lighthouse Media and its Mission through community outreach.
  • Assist with intern recruitment materials or onboarding tasks as needed.
  • Support Communications and Advancement projects, including newsletter content, event support, or research for awards and grant reporting.
  • Contribute to other areas of Chicago Lighthouse Communications and Advancement initiatives, including, but not limited to: content for newsletters, annual report and other publications, event participation and planning, awards research and submissions, and assisting with Chicago Lighthouse Media-related grant writing and grant reporting.
