About The Position

The Neurosurgery/Neurology (NNS) Internship at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine consists of advanced clinical training in medical and surgical aspects of canine and feline neurology. There will be opportunities for the intern to consult on neurologic cases in small animals, large animals and occasionally wildlife and exotic species. The internship will consist of a 80% commitment to the NNS and 10 - 20% to the small animal emergency/critical care service (daytime only 3 of 4 weekends with the previous Friday off). Salary Grade : Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Requirements

• Applicants must be eligible for employment in the U.S. at the time they apply for a position at MSU-CVM. Mississippi State University employs only citizens of the US, Canada, and Mexico, nationals of the US, and aliens authorized to work in the US by the time of commencement of the position.
• Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (see http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/colleges_accredited/allcolleges.asp) and have passed the NAVLE licensure examination, or a graduate that has completed the entire ECFVG qualification process (see http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp) by the time of the commencement of this position.
• Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
• Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Responsibilities

• The intern will work closely with the three faculty neurologists, and four neurosurgery/neurology residents, three NNS technicians, and the students on the NNS rotation in order to provide the highest quality of patient care and teaching.
• The NNS intern will attend weekly rounds, including NNS resident rounds, NNS case rounds, internal medicine topic rounds and bimonthly in-house journal club to be combined with a bimonthly videoconference journal club with 3 other university NNS groups. Additional monthly rounds include neuropathology rounds and neuroradiology rounds.
• The intern will have the opportunity to assist with after-hours emergency neurosurgery cases, shared among the NNS residents with faculty back-up.
• The NNS intern will be expected to contribute a minimum of one presentation (oral or poster) at a major veterinary conference (e.g., ACVIM Forum, ACVS Forum, SEVEN, VNS).
• There is the opportunity to interact with faulty in a project or case study with the goal of subsequent acceptance of at least one manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal.
