About The Position

T.Y. Lin is seeking an Intern Transportation Planner, Data Specialist for Summer 2026 in our New York City or Chicago office. Join a collaborative team and gain hands-on experience working on multimodal transportation and urban mobility projects, building both your technical and analytical skills through meaningful, real-world work.

Requirements

  • An interest in transportation engineering/planning and a desire to help solve urban mobility problems
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with a proven ability to efficiently prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing clear documentation and interacting professionally with clients and colleagues
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also able to effectively collaborate in a team environment
  • Strong commitment to integrity, consistently demonstrating ethical, fair, and responsible behavior
  • Commitment to innovation and continuous learning, with a passion for acquiring new skills and driving improvements
  • Experience developing reproducible workflows and scripts (Python, SQL, etc.) to streamline data processing and reporting
  • Strong attention to detail; confidence in approaching complex data tasks and open-ended problem statements
  • Working towards a Transportation or Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Urban Design, or Public Policy Undergraduate Degree or related Graduate Program
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is required
  • Experience working with large or messy datasets (cleaning, merging, validation)
  • Understanding of APIs and data pipelines

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the following: traffic operations software (Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, HCS), Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign), ArcGIS, drafting software (AutoCAD, MicroStation), data analytics and automation (Python, database management, automated reporting)

Responsibilities

  • Perform traffic, pedestrian, parking and safety analyses using software to aid project analyses and make informed recommendations
  • Conduct local site visits and field observations; gather data and conduct research
  • Collect, clean, and analyze transportation data from sources such as traffic counts, sensors, GPS/breadcrumb data, transit ridership, or other public datasets
  • Develop templates, tools, and automated workflows and scripts (Python, SQL, etc.) to streamline data processing and reporting for mobility and planning projects
  • Build dashboards and visualizations to communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms, including the development of maps, reports, presentations, and graphics
  • Collaborate with teammates to problem-solve and address project-related issues
  • Draft and finalize detailed reports summarizing findings and recommendations
