About The Position
MidAmerican Energy Company is seeking a student pursuing a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with an anticipated graduation date after December 2027. As a Substation Engineering Intern, you will gain hands-on experience supporting projects critical to the reliable delivery of energy while applying classroom knowledge in a real-world utility environment. This is a temporary, full-time, nonexempt hourly position for Summer 2027, based in Davenport, Iowa.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering and have achieved sophomore standing or higher.
- Available to work full-time during the internship period of May through August 2027.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Nice To Haves
- Demonstrated interest in power systems, substations, or electric utility engineering preferred.
Responsibilities
- Work with construction drawings and prints to develop an understanding of how electrical schematics and wiring diagrams integrate into substation design and construction.
- Gain knowledge of substation power equipment, including its function, application, and operation within the electrical grid.
- Develop an understanding of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) equipment, including their roles in monitoring and controlling substation operations.
- Assist in the design and execution of substation relay replacement, upgrade, and expansion projects, as well as larger substation capital projects.
- Gain exposure to project scoping, planning, and detailed cost estimating for substation projects.
- Support engineering staff with the design and modification of existing electrical substation projects requiring fundamental engineering principles and practices.
- Assist in reading, interpreting, and applying electrical schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, and construction documents.
- Participate in intern events that provide exposure to various areas of MidAmerican Energy, including visits to solar farms, wind farms, power plants, and other operational facilities.
- Attend project meetings and contribute updates related to project status and construction progress.
- Learn and apply Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and implemented throughout MidAmerican Energy.
- Develop an understanding of OSHA and MidAmerican Energy safety policies, procedures, and expectations, and learn how they are applied in day-to-day operations.
