About The Position

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. Students will enhance their existing skill set by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in communities through community engagement, partnership development, program implementation, health education, volunteer engagement, and impact communications. Students will support initiatives focused on nutrition security, hypertension control, tobacco and nicotine cessation, and community CPR readiness while helping develop culturally responsive programs and resources that promote heart health. Requirements

• Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in public health, community health, advocacy or other related degree program.
• Willingness to travel to and from local community events and local meetings.
• Bilingual in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
• Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
• Ability to learn quickly and have focused attention to detail.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and basic knowledge of Canva.
• Reliable Wi-Fi connection and reliable transportation.
• Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 9am-5pm.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.
• For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.

Responsibilities

• Assist in organizing and implementing community-based and culturally responsive health initiatives and programs.
• Support work around community impact priority issues, including hypertension control, nutrition security, community response, and tobacco/vaping.
• Assist with program planning, implementation, tracking, and evaluation.
• Support the planning and implementation of trainings, workshops, meetings, health fairs, and community events.
• Engage community organizations and healthcare partners aligned with priority initiatives and explore opportunities for collaboration.
• Assist the Community Impact team in communicating the impact of local work.
• Identify impact stories for showcasing, enhance them through research and interviews, and develop communication pieces for online and offline audiences.
• Maintain volunteer databases and communications and serve as a point of contact for volunteer engagement opportunities.
• Develop volunteer communications, including newsletters and updates on upcoming activities and events.
• Identify, review, and develop resources that meet community health needs, such as playbooks and other tools.
• Attend internal and external meetings as requested, including health fairs and community events.
