About The Position

This internship position is for the Spring session (January - May) and involves assisting with fisheries management across northeast South Dakota. The intern will work both independently and as part of a team, contributing to activities such as trap and transfer of fish species, walleye spawning and stocking, population surveys, aquatic invasive species (AIS) education and outreach, and research projects. Key duties include field work (netting, electrofishing, AIS inspection), data entry using tablets/computers, and laboratory work (fish aging structures, age estimation). The role also involves maintenance of vehicles, equipment, buildings, and grounds. Opportunities for independent research and publication are available.

Requirements

• Must be a current part-time or full-time student (minimum of 6 credit hours) in the upcoming semester or in the immediately preceding semester.
• Must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time of application.
• Should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program by the start of the internship.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
• Must be willing to work nights and weekends.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Assist with trap and transfer of various fish species to community ponds.
• Support walleye spawning and stocking efforts.
• Conduct adult fish population surveys.
• Engage in aquatic invasive species (AIS) education and outreach.
• Assist with ongoing research projects.
• Perform field work including netting, electrofishing, and AIS watercraft inspection.
• Enter data using tablets and computers.
• Perform laboratory work such as removing fish aging structures and estimating fish ages.
• Complete maintenance associated with vehicles, equipment, buildings, and grounds.
