About The Position

IPG Photonics is seeking an Engineering Intern for a summer position. The Automation Group is a team of engineers and programmers dedicated to automating various manufacturing tasks. Current projects include the design, production, installation, and support of test and measurement systems, computer-controlled manufacturing tools, and assembly stations for optical components and lasers. The group utilizes motion components (including robotic arms), machine vision systems, dispensing systems, DAQ, and industrial control equipment, typically controlled by LabVIEW or C# custom applications.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a relevant engineering degree program (Robotics Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering preferred)
  • Familiarity with the following tools and techniques: Remote control and Data Acquisition of scientific and industrial equipment (DAQ and general I/O boards, oscilloscopes, optical metrological devices, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Software development of automated procedures in LabVIEW, C# or Python
  • Familiarity with Machine Vision applications
  • Familiarity with Motion applications (motorized positioners, 6-axis robotic arms)
  • Familiarity with Mechanical CAD (SOLIDWORKS or similar)
  • Familiarity with Free-space optical alignment
  • Familiarity with Statistical analysis of engineering data
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Aptitude to learn new systems and technologies
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office Products (Word, Excel, Visio)

Responsibilities

  • Design and assembly of mechanical and electrical components and assemblies for automated production tools
  • Installation of hardware/equipment/driver/controller for R&D and production stations
  • Development and optimization of manufacturing steps in an assembly procedure
  • Development of data processing algorithms for internal and customer products
  • Software design for process control, DAQ and logging applications
