About The Position

The Future Combatants and Mission Systems (FCMS) group is seeking a motivated Systems Engineering Intern to support the design, development, integration, test, and fielding of advanced systems for the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard. FCMS operates within the Unmanned Systems and Future Combatants (UFC) business area and delivers mission-focused capabilities in a fast-paced engineering environment. Our engineers frequently contribute across the full product lifecycle—from early requirements definition and system architecture through integration, verification, deployment, and sustainment. This internship provides the opportunity to work alongside experienced multidisciplinary teams and gain meaningful, hands-on exposure to real-world defense and maritime systems engineering.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline
  • Interest in systems engineering, defense systems, maritime platforms, unmanned systems, or mission systems
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative technical team
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools; experience with engineering, requirements-management, modeling, or test tools is a plus
  • Ability to meet applicable requirements for work on U.S. government contracts
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Department of Defense Secret security clearance is preferred at time of hire.
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or project experience involving systems engineering, controls, communications, sensors, or software development
  • Familiarity with requirements traceability, system modeling, interface control, or test engineering concepts
  • Experience with tools such as MATLAB, Python, Simulink, Cameo/MagicDraw, DOORS, Jira, Git, or similar engineering tools
  • Interest in supporting maritime, naval, autonomous, or unmanned mission applications

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the development, analysis, and management of system, subsystem, and interface requirements
  • Supporting system architecture development, trade studies, and technical design reviews
  • Participating in integration and test activities for hardware, software, and mission-system components
  • Helping develop verification and validation plans, procedures, and test documentation
  • Analyzing system performance, test results, and technical data to identify issues and recommend solutions
  • Supporting configuration management, technical documentation, and traceability activities
  • Collaborating with systems, software, electrical, mechanical, test, manufacturing, and program teams
  • Observing or supporting fielding, customer demonstrations, and lifecycle sustainment activities, as program needs permit
  • Applying engineering fundamentals to solve complex problems in support of Navy and Coast Guard missions
