About The Position

This internship will support RMR’s work with Energy Star, LEED, energy efficiency initiatives, and building benchmarking for its client properties. In addition, the intern will support sustainability engagement and other programs of the Energy & Sustainability Department.

Requirements

  • Availability to work 20-30 hours per week, predominantly in our Newton, MA office.
  • Currently a junior, senior, or graduate student at an accredited college or university studying Environmental Policy, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering or Sciences, Mechanical Engineering or Business-related degree
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Good communication skills including technical writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work.
  • Proficiency with presentation skills and Microsoft software including Word and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of corporate sustainability programs and strategies a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, clean, and validate energy and water data from Real-Time Monitoring / Connected Buildings systems, ENERGY STAR, and utility sources.
  • Use analytics tools (e.g., Python, R, Power BI) to analyze building performance data using AI/ML models, identifying trends, anomalies, and energy efficiency opportunities.
  • Interpret AI/ML model outputs and support development of dashboards that integrate real-time data with AI-driven insights.
  • Assist with energy savings calculations using measured and model-informed data.
  • Support onboarding of buildings by gathering and organizing system data (HVAC, meters, controls) and assisting with data setup to ensure data is structured for AI/ML analysis and ongoing performance monitoring.
  • Review incoming data to help flag anomalies, gaps, or data quality issues.
  • Track buildings required for energy benchmarking, update ENERGY STAR profiles, and assist with utility data uploads to maintain data consistency across systems for reliable analytics.
  • Provide support for sustainability initiatives (e.g., LEED, policy tracking), presentations, and ad hoc projects, including summarizing and communicating data-driven insights to stakeholders.
  • Assist with tracking of new city, county and state environmental (energy and carbon emissions performance) policies that affect our clients’ properties or RMR directly.
  • Other projects/responsibilities as assigned or as aligned with candidate’s skills.
