About The Position

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. This internship supports the Data Science team and provides hands-on experience in biostatistics, statistical programming, clinical research methods, and applied data analysis within cardiovascular, clinical, and population health research settings. The intern will collaborate with biostatisticians, data scientists, clinicians, and research partners to support rigorous study design, analysis, interpretation, and scientific communication. Requirements

• Currently pursuing an MS or PhD degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
• Foundational knowledge of statistical methods, research design, and interpretation of quantitative findings.
• Experience with statistical programming in R.
• Experience in working with healthcare, clinical, cardiovascular, registry, or population health data.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Commitment to reproducible research, data quality, and clear documentation.
• Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
• Coursework or applied experience in regression modeling, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, causal inference, clinical trials, or observational research.
• Communicate project details to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.
• For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.

Nice To Haves

• Additional experience in Python or SAS is a plus.
• Familiarity with AI/ML/LLM is preferred.
• Experience creating publication-ready tables and figures or contributing to scientific writing is preferred.
• Familiarity with version control, code review, or reproducible workflow practices are preferred.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparing, cleaning, validating, and documenting clinical, registry, and research datasets.
• Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analyses under the guidance of senior team members.
• Support study design, sample size and power considerations, statistical analysis plans, and interpretation of results.
• Develop and evaluate statistical models, which may include regression, survival analysis, longitudinal analysis, mixed-effects models, and other methods appropriate to the research question.
• Create reproducible analytical workflows using R, Python, SAS, or other approved statistical tools.
• Perform quality-control reviews of data, code, tables, figures, and analytical outputs.
• Produce clear tables, figures, data visualizations, and summaries for scientific and business audiences.
• Contribute to literature reviews, manuscripts, abstracts, conference materials, and presentations.
• Participate in team meetings, code reviews, documentation activities, and research best practices.
