About The Position

The Intern, Building Condition Assessor is an entry-level position within the BGIS Professional Services team. This multi-disciplinary team of engineers and technical staff provides services across BGIS Accounts, including Asset Management, Building Science, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Energy Efficiency, and Sustainability. The Building Condition Assessor role offers valuable site evaluation and engineering judgment experience, allowing the intern to work independently while being supported by a team of engineering professionals. The position involves applying building condition assessment processes and technical standards to identify asset conditions and deficiencies, with the output being recommendations for Capital Project work that can lead to Project Management, Engineering Design, and Construction Management roles. The contract dates are September to December, and the work arrangement requires travel to the Markham office and comfort with traveling to different sites with a senior team member.

Requirements

  • University or college diploma in relevant technical field such as architectural, civil, mechanical electrical engineering, building science or building engineering.
  • General knowledge of the process of cost estimating for replacement and repair of building components and systems.
  • General knowledge of building science including base knowledge of all areas of study - architectural building envelope, mechanical and electrical building systems or site components.
  • General knowledge of general building design, construction and facility operation of commercial buildings.
  • Ability to work independently and learn quickly.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Excel and ability to learn other applications quickly.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Detailed-oriented.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrolled as EIT, P. Eng, C.Tech or RET an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Completes site visits at client real estate locations and performs building component identification and condition evaluation.
  • Completes reporting using BGIS software for use in RealAsset – our BGIS developed Asset Management software.
  • Provides recommendations and cost estimates for building envelopes, components and systems repair or replacement for inclusion in the capital budget plan.
  • Other duties as assigned.
