About The Position

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director—Recreational Sports Programs and Facility Operations, the Intermittent Fitness Instructors teach a variety of classes currently offered within the Group Exercise and Instructional Class Program. The staff is responsible for developing individual class lesson plans, being familiar with various styles of class formats offered, supervising class participants, and leading instructional sessions. This position is based at the Cal Poly Maritime Academy on the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, CA.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, muscular function, exercise program implementation, safe group exercise, or instructional procedures and use of related class materials and/or equipment.
  • Professional instructor certification in related field or prior training required.
  • Extensive knowledge of classes being taught.
  • Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Current American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in the following: Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED is required within 30 days of hire, training provided by ASI.
  • Understanding of current trends in area of expertise.
  • Previous experience in supervising and meeting participants in an instructional environment.
  • Ability to learn new formats.
  • Consistent attendance at continuing education workshops, lectures, and conferences.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise class participants.
  • Lead exercise classes and instructional sessions.
  • Maintain familiarity with evacuation plans for work area.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and trainings.
  • Provide quality customer service for all staff and members.
  • Maintain a working relationship with staff and co-workers.
  • Adhere to and enforce all PEAC departmental policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to professional development and leadership.
  • Maintain a clean and inviting instructional area.
  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
