About The Position

EXP is seeking an Intermediate Materials Technician to join their Soils and Materials team in Calgary, AB. This role involves working closely with Project Engineers/Managers and the Discipline Manager to conduct construction observations, confirm construction materials design elements, and perform materials quality assurance/control testing and reporting in both field and laboratory settings. The position is primarily for projects in and around the Calgary area. The successful candidate will split their time between field and laboratory work, with additional responsibilities assigned based on experience and proficiency.

Requirements

Minimum 3 years of experience in concrete, asphalt, and soil testing
Ability to work safely and effectively in field environments on active construction sites
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams and client groups
Must have a valid driver’s license
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, meet deadlines, and perform under pressure
Highly organized with strong time management skills

Nice To Haves

Completion of, or current enrollment in, a recognized Civil Engineering Technology diploma program is considered an asset
Familiarity with construction specifications used by the City of Calgary and surrounding municipalities is considered an asset
Holding a CCIL certification will be an asset

Responsibilities

Executing on site concrete tests which includes casting cylinders, slump test, and air content test
In Place Density testing using a Nuclear Densometer
Carry out asphalt and concrete coring
Collecting soil and asphalt samples on site
Some in-lab work, such as testing concrete cylinders, grain size analysis, Proctor tests, asphalt tests, geotechnical index testing, etc.
Subgrade field reviews
Problem solving of project site issues
Attend staff and project meetings when requested
Interaction with clients and contractors to provide excellent service and a quick response to their testing needs
