About The Position

Intermediate Maintenance Aircraft Structural Mechanic II performs repairs and maintenance on T-6B components, including inspection, operational testing, removal, replacement, repair, troubleshooting, balancing, preservation, and modification. This role requires applying technical knowledge and experience to solve problems and repair component discrepancies. The mechanic must be able to read, write, and interpret technical manuals and directives, and exercise judgment in determining work sequences, tool selection, and testing requirements. A significant portion of the workload involves sheet metal repairs, and all work is subject to inspection for compliance with approved practices.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high degree of knowledge/expertise in aircraft maintenance, including knowledge and experience on T-34C or similar aircraft.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of applicable technical manuals, service bulletins, maintenance manuals, blueprints, maintenance forms, and continuous inspection procedures.
  • Ability to organize and plan work.
  • Must possess mathematical skills.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, and communicate the English language, and follow and administer verbal and written instructions.
  • Requires the ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Must have a strong background in sheet metal repair.
  • Requires the ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Satisfactory completion of U. S. Armed Forces aircraft structural repair courses or equivalent.
  • Graduation from high school or GED required.
  • Must be able to meet any government/company licensing/qualification requirements for the position.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as an aircraft structural mechanic.
  • Must be familiar with aircraft systems, tools, drawings, schematics, and normal safety requirements.
  • Must have experience in corrosion detection, treatment, and prevention.
  • Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Requires frequent climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, lifting, carrying, balancing, and reaching above shoulder level, lifting, pushing, or pulling weight up to 70 pounds.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Must have close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires hearing to the normal range.
  • Requires shift work and a diversity of working conditions that range from a standard shop-type environment, where there may be no physical discomfort, to an environment where inclement weather may subject individuals to severe changes in temperature, wind, rain, direct sun, etc.
  • May be required to work in areas where noise hazards are prevalent.
  • Must properly wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Will be required to work with hazardous materials.
  • Exposure to high intensity noise levels, extreme changes in temperature, materials identified on Safety Data Sheets, working at heights on or around aircraft, and machinery.
  • Exposure to hazards associated with the use of hazardous materials, performing sheet metal repairs, working in the vicinity of protruding components such as propellers, exhaust stacks, static wicks, flaps, doors, antennas, etc.
  • Aircraft maintenance shops, hangars, and flight line.
  • May require travel in support of cross-country rescue and detachments of unknown duration.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks in accordance with instructions, applicable technical data, manuals, and directives.
  • Identify, select, and work with aircraft structural repair materials such as metals, fasteners, and common hardware.
  • Remove, reinstall, repair, fabricate, or replace defective parts on all components.
  • Perform sheet metal repairs to components such as flight controls, stabilizers, doors, and canopy assemblies.
  • Ensure all aircraft parts/components received for repair are properly documented, and that repaired, serviceable, or unserviceable parts are properly tagged/identified, turned in, and/or disposed of as required.
  • Perform damage repairs and minor structural modifications under the direction of a higher-rated structural mechanic.
  • Manufacture aircraft structural parts, components, and assemblies using identical parts, drawings, and templates in accordance with recommended procedures and/or verbal instruction.
  • Verify discrepancies before repairs begin.
  • Evaluate components and document any discrepancies to identify methods of repair and/or replacement.
  • Identify and order necessary parts, materials, and tooling requirements.
  • Perform structural repair maintenance on related maintenance support equipment such as maintenance stands and GSE equipment.
  • Comply with and follow established standards of workmanship, safety, quality, and production.
  • Use technical data, maintenance instructions, MRC's, drawings, sketches, and other related maintenance manuals as required for aircraft structural maintenance.
  • Work with and repair plastic components, and perform fiberglass repair.
  • Fabricate aircraft (metal) tube assemblies as required.
  • Use, inspect, and maintain common metalworking tools and equipment.
  • Perform aircraft preservation/depreservation as required.
  • Assist in performing weight and balance as required.
  • May be required to perform collateral duty inspection assignments.
  • Complete and/or assist in the completion of applicable maintenance forms as required.
  • Operate ground support equipment as required.
  • Be an Aircraft Handler and brake rider certified.
  • May be required to be Plane Captain certified and perform pre-flight/post-flight/turnaround/daily inspections and servicing when required.
  • Perform aircraft jacking and hoisting operations as required.
  • Identify and treat corrosion.
  • Utilize manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service bulletins, Maintenance Engineering Directives, Maintenance Requirement Cards, Technical Directives, schematics, drawings, blueprints, charts, and other applicable data/publications to replace, repair, test, modify, and rebuild aircraft components.
  • May be required to be NDI qualified/certified for magnetic particle, dye penetrate, or eddy current inspection operations.
  • Comply with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, and Tool Control Programs.
  • Comply with all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations as applicable to the contract, facilities, and job assignment.
  • Provide technical assistance, guidance, and instruction as required for the training of personnel in the same or lesser grade classifications.
  • Demonstrate job procedures and conduct on-the-job training.
  • Assist as directed to ensure the safety, security, and preservation of government/company-owned equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as required, such as removing and/or installing panels, flaps, flight controls, seats, etc.
  • Participate in the proper maintenance and cleanliness of spaces and facilities.
  • Deal with the customer in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
  • Provide own hand tools as required.
  • Ensure compliance with all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations, such as applicable to the contract, site, and work center.
