The Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct and indirect patient care to adult and geriatric patients requiring intermediate-level care and continuous cardiac monitoring. The RN assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates patient care while promoting patient safety, quality outcomes, and a positive patient experience. The IMCU/Medical Telemetry RN cares for patients with complex medical conditions who need a higher level of monitoring than a traditional medical-surgical unit but do not require intensive care services. The role includes a mix of traditional medical-surgical and intermediate-care patients. The RN provides professional nursing care in accordance with established statutes, standards, and practices; assesses patients’ age-specific needs; and uses available resources to evaluate biophysical, psychosocial, cultural, environmental, discharge-planning, self-care, and education needs. The RN reassesses patients each shift, upon transfer or discharge, and as needed; follows universal precautions and infection-control and isolation procedures; and documents patient status, nursing interventions, and responses. The RN participates in discharge planning and ensures assigned patients have a written teaching and discharge plan. The role also requires sound nursing judgment in routine and emergency situations, effective collaboration with healthcare providers, and the ability to titrate select cardiac drips.
