About The Position

Schlegel Urban Developments Corp. (SUD) is a mid-sized Kitchener based real estate development and management company. The company is recognized for its master planned residential subdivision projects and unique commercial developments. SUD is a family-owned business, a hands-on organization with a committed and talented team. We are looking for an individual who is looking to combine their passion for accounting with an interest in the real estate and/or restaurant industry by joining our growing and highly effective accounting group.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in progressive accounting roles
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Independent self-starter that enjoys a hands-on small team environment
  • Excels at demonstrating attention to detail and achieving accuracy while adhering to deadlines on a consistent basis
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, including tact, diplomacy and judgement to problem solve independently and in collaboration with other team members

Nice To Haves

  • CPA designation
  • Experience with Yardi products or Quickbooks Online
  • Property management, restaurant or brewery experience and industry knowledge

Responsibilities

  • Support the Finance Manager with the commercial and residential tenant related life cycle, including ensuring pertinent lease details are captured, reviewing tenant ledgers for accuracy, and managing utility account transitions.
  • Support the Finance Manager with the calculation of annual operating cost reconciliations with tenants.
  • Act as a knowledgeable contact for tenants and serve as an information liaison between tenants and management.
  • Work with VP Leasing & Commercial Real Estate on monitoring operating costs and cost reduction efforts.
  • Support accounts receivable collections.
  • Support the Finance Manager with monitoring inventory management and point-of-sales systems for accuracy.
  • Track and record weekly petty cash and credit card transactions.
  • Record routine transactions such as mortgage payments, recurring journal entries, and amortization.
  • Support the Finance Manager with month-end and year-end closing procedures, including balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Review the general ledger monthly for coding accuracy and investigate variances from budget.
  • Support the Finance Manager with the annual budgeting process.
  • Prepare various accounting reports and analysis as required.
  • Support the Finance Manager with external filings/reporting, such as HST, EHT, WSIB, MPAC, Statscan, and other excise tax filings.
