About The Position

The Interconnection Manager I is responsible for all aspects of transmission and interconnection of renewable energy projects. Under the supervision of the Sr. Director, Transmission, the Interconnection Manager I is responsible for all items related to interconnection, including related studies, schedule, utility communications and milestone management. This role will be hybrid requiring a minimum of 3 days in office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field required.
  • 5 or more years of related experience in transmission planning and/or renewable energy interconnection required.
  • Ability to travel domestically 5 to 15% required.
  • Advanced level of knowledge in: PowerWorld, PSSE, or TARA power flow analysis.
  • Advanced level of knowledge in: Network upgrade cost allocation methodologies.
  • Advanced level of knowledge in: Transmission facilities scopes, costs, equipment lead times, and construction timelines.
  • Advanced level of knowledge in: Interpretation of technical and legal documentation.
  • Advanced level of knowledge in: Engineering Finance.
  • Advanced level of knowledge in: Project management.
  • Oral and written skills include: Internal communication with engineering, design, GIS, development, origination, and construction.
  • Oral and written skills include: External communication with system operators, transmission owners, consultants, regulators, buyers.
  • Competent in: Functional competencies include attention to detail, continuous improvement, customer focus, prioritization, and managing vision & purpose.

  • Master’s degree in Power Systems, Finance, Analytics or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Uses all available information, including power flow, grid strength assessment, visual inspection of transmission equipment, and transmission topology, to assess the capability of power systems to accommodate plant interconnection and to estimate costs and schedule of interconnection.
  • Contracts third-party resources for transmission analysis, plant design, and interconnection studies. Oversees the cost, timing, and accuracy of third-party studies.
  • Engages with developers to accommodate interconnection location and timing to development targets, milestones, and constraints.
  • Submits interconnection requests and is the primary point of contact for the grid operators and transmission owners throughout the interconnection process.
  • Liaises with developers, system operators, and transmission service providers to clarify and fulfill interconnection financial, technical, and land requirements on schedule.
  • Coordinates with equipment vendors to meet modeling needs and performance requirements of the system operator, transmission owner, and/or regulatory bodies.
  • Works with engineering to fulfill interconnection modeling and study requirements. Serves as an intermediary between system operators/transmission owners and engineering/design teams.
  • Troubleshoots any issues arising from the modeling and study of the interconnecting plant.
  • Interprets and critically reviews interconnection studies. Finds and proposes alternative solutions to transmission or interconnection issues.
  • Attends work regularly and punctually, as scheduled or expected.
  • Complies with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct and Company Policies & Procedures.
  • Supports origination in bidding and sale of projects.
  • Serves as interconnection subject matter expert during the sale of the project or power purchase agreement. Supports transition of interconnection ownership.
  • Performs handoff of plant design and interconnection requirements to engineering and construction teams. Communicates the design decisions that have been made in fulfillment of interconnection standards. Follows up to ensure interconnection-driven design decisions are known issues throughout engineering, procurement, and construction. Communicates the interconnection consequences of any changes to the plant design.
  • Serves as company representative in stakeholder meetings related to transmission and interconnection. Represents the company’s interests in stakeholder decisions and votes. Comments on topics of consequence for the company.
  • Remains current on transmission owner and system operator tariffs, business practice manuals, and functional specifications.
  • Updates development strategy upon changes in system transmission plans, market rules, and queue reform.
  • Presents, supports, and leads-by-example with a safety and quality-oriented attitude.
  • Leads by example to show that safety is the most important function, ensuring that all employees follow safe practices while working.
  • Accountable to continually reinforce safe behaviors and correct “at risk” behaviors.
  • Adheres to and ensures all site team members understands standard operating procedures.

  • Independently manages multiple projects through interconnection processes, including proactively engaging with utilities, finance, development, origination, consultants, and any other entities necessary to successfully achieve company goals.
