About The Position

The Intensive Care Units at The George Washington University Hospital deliver advanced, high‑acuity care to some of the most critically ill patients in the region. ICU nurses here are not limited to a single specialty unit—our team practices across all critical care areas, gaining broad expertise while supporting diverse patient populations with complex, life‑threatening conditions. Our ICUs include: Medical ICU – 32 beds: Complex medical critical care Surgical ICU – 24 beds: Post‑operative and surgical specialty care Trauma ICU – 20 beds: High‑acuity trauma and resuscitation Neuro ICU – 20 beds: Neurological and neurosurgical critical care Cardiovascular ICU – 24 beds: Advanced cardiac, surgical cardiac, and ECMO support Working across these units, ICU nurses develop mastery in ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, advanced pharmacologic therapies, and multidisciplinary critical care collaboration. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required or currently enrolled
  • Washington, D.C. RN license or eligibility
  • 2 years full-time (or 4 years part-time) critical care experience
  • BLS and ACLS required
  • Commitment to “Every Moment Matters”

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based, compassionate care to critically ill medical patients.
  • Manage ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring systems, and continuous infusions; respond to rapid patient changes.
  • Partner with intensivists, specialists, respiratory therapists, and care teams to deliver comprehensive care.
  • Manage complex cases including multi-organ failure, sepsis, and respiratory distress.
  • Support patients and families through critical illness with empathy and education.
  • Ensure precise and timely charting of patient care.
  • Guide families through disease processes and recovery expectations.
  • Contribute to improving ICU outcomes and best practices.
