About The Position

Excelitas is a global technology leader focused on delivering market-driven solutions for illumination, optical, detection, and imaging needs across various sectors. This role is ideal for a strategic thinker who will partner closely with R&D, engineering, and business leaders to protect, manage, and leverage the company’s intellectual property portfolio. The attorney will establish and implement policies and practices related to filing and renewing patents and trademarks and provide strategic counsel on all IP matters. This role will be based at our global headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA and will report to the VP & Deputy General Counsel.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Admission to a state bar in good standing; USPTO registration strongly preferred
  • At least 7 years of experience in intellectual property law, preferably with 3+ years in house experience
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable business advice
  • Experience working directly with technical subject matter, R&D, and engineering teams
  • Experience in a fast paced, innovation driven industry
  • Strategic mindset with a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating IP risks
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate across teams
  • Must be a US Person/No sponsorship offered for this position

Responsibilities

  • IP Strategy and Portfolio Management
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive IP strategy aligned with business objectives
  • Manage the company’s global patent, trademark, and trade secret portfolios
  • Evaluate invention disclosures; manage patent and trademark review and decision making process
  • Work with outside counsel to draft applications and responses to office actions
  • Oversee outside counsel on all IP related matters
  • Risk Management and Enforcement
  • Conduct freedom‑to‑operate analyses and advise on IP risks related to new product development
  • Monitor potential infringement issues and coordinate enforcement actions when necessary
  • Manage IP disputes, including cease‑and‑desist letters, oppositions, and litigation strategy
  • Transactional Support
  • Draft, review, and negotiate IP‑related agreements, including licensing and joint development agreements
  • Support M&A activities by conducting IP due diligence and advising on integration of acquired assets
  • Internal Advisory and Education
  • Provide practical, business‑focused guidance to cross‑functional teams
  • Develop and deliver training on IP best practices and innovation capture
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on IP trends, risks, and opportunities
