About The Position

Inova Schar Cancer Institute is looking for an Integrative Oncology Physician to join the nationally recognized Peterson Life with Cancer program as the inaugural physician leader for Integrative Oncology. This is a unique opportunity to provide clinical leadership within a well-established supportive oncology program while expanding evidence-based integrative oncology services for patients across the cancer continuum. This role will be full-time, sign-on bonus and relocation assistance eligible. The Integrative Oncology physician is a licensed physician with specialized expertise in integrative evidence-based complementary cancer care. The integrative oncology program at Inova Schar Cancer focuses on bridging evidence-based complementary therapies with conventional cancer treatments to manage side effects, reduce stress, and improve clinical outcomes, overall well-being and quality of life. The physician leader would join a large and nationally recognized team within the Inova Peterson Life with Cancer program to provide comprehensive integrative cancer patient care. The Peterson Life with Cancer program has been a national leader in providing comprehensive supportive and integrative oncology services for more than 30 years. The Integrative Oncology Physician will collaborate with a highly experienced team of behavioral health specialists, exercise physiologists, dietitians, acupuncturists, massage therapists, nurse navigators, and survivorship experts to provide personalized, whole-person cancer care that enhances quality of life throughout treatment and survivorship.

Requirements

  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Virginia
  • Successful completion of physician residency program
  • Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited institution
  • Ability to successfully complete the credentialing process by third-party payors and Ability to enrolled as a CMS Medicare/Medicaid payor
  • Successful completion of credentialing for Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges sufficient to perform all required services

Nice To Haves

  • Board certification in Integrative Medicine (e.g., ABOIM) and/or specialized oncology or PGY2 residency training.
  • Strong communication skills to discuss complementary therapies safely, deep knowledge of botanical/supplement-drug interactions, and expertise in holistic/lifestyle medicine.
  • Demonstrated experience caring for patients with cancer in a multidisciplinary oncology setting.
  • Interest in program development, interdisciplinary collaboration, education, and clinical innovation.
  • Experience in clinical research, quality improvement, and scholarly activity is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct personalized assessments and develop individual care plans to evaluate symptoms, health goals, and values across all stages of cancer treatment and survivorship for individual patients.
  • Recommend and coordinate non-pharmacological interventions like acupuncture, yoga, massage, and mindfulness to alleviate fatigue, pain, and chemotherapy-induced nausea.
  • Partner with a pharmacy leader to develop and implement guidelines and treatment recommendations using complementary medications for symptom management in cancer patients.
  • Guide patients on evidence-based dietary changes, physical activity, sleep hygiene, and stress-reduction techniques to optimize their well-being.
  • Review patient use of herbs and natural supplements, proactively identifying and mitigating potential drug-herb interactions.
  • Educate physicians, advanced practice providers, trainees, and staff on evidence-based integrative oncology practices.
  • Help advance the strategic growth of the Integrative Oncology program through development of clinical services, care pathways, clinical research, and evidence-based best practices.
  • Work closely with oncologists, behavioral health experts, exercise therapists, acupuncturists, dietitians, and palliative care team members to optimize patient care and ensure therapies safely complement primary cancer treatments.
