About The Position

Compass Family Services is a non-profit organization with over 100 years of experience dedicated to assisting families facing or at risk of homelessness in San Francisco. The Intake Specialist is a key member of the Compass Family Resource Center team, which provides essential support to these families. The Resource Center offers access to basic necessities like diapers, food, and clothing, along with service referrals, case management, job search assistance, drop-in childcare, and family-focused support groups and classes.

Requirements

  • Understanding of trauma-informed care and issues facing homeless families.
  • Knowledge of San Francisco social service resources.
  • Experience working in crisis situations; ability to assess and de-escalate situations quickly.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Outstanding work habits: strong communication skills, reliable, team-oriented, organized.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
  • Able to lift at least 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Salesforce experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial intake interviews with families seeking support.
  • Determine program eligibility for families and provide information and referrals.
  • Collaborate with the Family Resource Center team to ensure smooth operations.
  • Welcome families upon arrival at Compass Family Services.
  • Conduct initial assessments to understand family needs, provide service information, and guide them through options.
  • Screen families for eligibility across various programs, complete Navigation Forms, and provide direct referrals.
  • Coordinate with the Office Manager/Receptionist to manage family flow within the building.
  • Train and mentor interns and volunteers on intake and drop-in best practices.
  • Assess emerging family needs, identify trends, and maintain updated resources with colleagues.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date records in Compass' Salesforce database.
  • Organize and manage client records for consistency and quality assurance.
  • Support Distribution Center operations, including inventory management, restocking, volunteer support, and distribution of basic needs items.
