About The Position

James F. Butler & Associates, insurance staff counsel for State Farm Insurance Companies, is seeking a Paralegal for its Jericho, New York Claim Litigation office. The role supports attorneys handling first- and third-party insurance defense and bodily injury cases, including discovery, pleadings, pre-trial motions, and trial preparation. The paralegal works under attorney supervision and interacts with clients, experts, and witnesses throughout the litigation process. The office offers collaboration with experienced peer mentors, a variety of work, and opportunities for career development; there are no billable hours. This is a hybrid position requiring time in the office and virtually, and work arrangements may change based on business needs. The stated schedule is Monday through Friday, either 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The position is based at 300 Jericho Quadrangle, Jericho, New York 11753.

Requirements

1–7 years of recent civil litigation experience; insurance defense or bodily injury experience is preferred.
Experience drafting discovery responses and preparing for trial.
Ability to draft pleadings, routine motions, legal memoranda, litigation reports, and medical summaries.
Familiarity with New York Civil Court Rules and Procedures.
Knowledge of medical terminology and records.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently, prioritize workload, multitask in a fast-paced environment, and communicate effectively.
Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
Legal research skills.
Strong software and technical skills.
Working knowledge of a case management system and a document storage system.
Prior litigation or paralegal experience, a paralegal degree, certificate, or certification, medical training, relevant coursework, or a legal studies degree is required.
Must be eligible to work lawfully in the U.S. immediately; State Farm will not sponsor applicants for U.S. work opportunities.

Responsibilities

Assist attorneys with discovery and pre-trial matters under attorney supervision.
Assist attorneys with assigned case files and other legal services under attorney supervision.
Prepare cases for court appearances, depositions, and trial, including contacting experts and clients.
Draft motions, pleadings, litigation reports, and medical summaries.
Draft, serve, and respond to discovery, pleadings, and pre-trial motions, and support trial preparation.
Interact with clients, experts, and witnesses throughout the litigation process.
