About The Position

TRIUMF is seeking a skilled Instrumentation Technician to join their research laboratory team specializing in ion sources and beam transport systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning of complex electronic and electromechanical systems used in particle accelerator research. This role involves general support for laboratory equipment, including preventive maintenance, inspections of power supplies, diagnostic instruments, vacuum components, PLCs, and control systems. The technician will diagnose and repair electrical, electronic, and mechanical faults, address thermal management issues in high-power equipment, and assist with the installation of new ion sources, beamlines, and support systems. Additionally, the role requires the use of diagnostic tools to measure electrical parameters, perform insulation resistance testing, analyze signals with oscilloscopes, and calibrate diagnostic devices. Maintaining comprehensive technical records, schematics, and repair logs, as well as communicating technical issues effectively, are key responsibilities. The position also provides technical support for electrostatic beamlines and stable ion sources.

Requirements

  • A diploma in electronics or electrical engineering technology or a similar diploma from a technical institute.
  • Minimum of 1 year related experience after technical certification.
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit theory.
  • Proficiency reading electrical schematics and assembly drawings.
  • Knowledge of control systems and PLC operation.
  • Experience with soldering techniques for precision electronics.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, DraftSight).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, sound engineering judgment, attention to detail and prioritization.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
  • Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in electronics repair or industrial maintenance preferred.
  • Background in high-voltage, electronics and vacuum systems beneficial.
  • Some work will require access to exclusion areas where there are activated components. The position requires the incumbent to be trained as a NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER (NEW). This is required to access and work in areas that are limited to NEWs, as well as for planning and conducting work in radiation environments. This training will be provided by TRIUMF to the successful candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular preventive maintenance activities for all laboratory equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections of power supplies, diagnostic instruments, vacuum components, PLCs, and control systems.
  • Diagnose electrical, electronic, and mechanical faults through systematic analysis; repair or replace defective parts.
  • Address thermal management issues in high-power equipment.
  • Assist with the installation of new ion sources, beamlines, and support systems.
  • Monitor temperatures in thermal management systems.
  • Employ diagnostic tools to measure electrical parameters.
  • Perform insulation resistance testing with megohmmeters (meggers) and high-potential (hi-pot) testers.
  • Analyze digital and analog signals using oscilloscopes.
  • Calibrate diagnostic devices and associated instruments for ion sources and beam transport systems.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical records, schematics, and repair logs.
  • Communicate technical issues and progress effectively to team members.
  • Develop technical documentation for lab procedures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, repairs, and component replacements.
  • Provide moderately complex technical support for the electrostatic beamlines and stable ion sources.
