About The Position

Austin Industrial is seeking an experienced Instrumentation Technician for a full-time maintenance position in Decatur, IL. This role involves installing, testing, calibrating, troubleshooting, overhauling, and repairing electrical, controlling, indicating, and measuring instrument devices to ensure specified operating performance. The technician will use hand tools, testing and calibrating instruments, and precision measuring instruments. A key part of the role includes reading and understanding manuals, wiring or instrumentation schematics, and testing specifications. The position also requires troubleshooting electric motors, installing wiring to circuits, and possessing knowledge of electrical schematics and PLCs. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

Ability to install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, overhaul and repair electrical, controlling, indicating and measuring instrument devices.
Ability to use hand tools, testing and calibrating instruments, and precision measuring instruments.
Ability to read and understand manuals, wiring or instrumentation schematics and testing specifications.
Ability to troubleshoot electric motors.
Ability to install wiring to circuits.
Some knowledge of electrical schematics and PLC's.
3-5 years of Journeyman level experience.
Maintain current electrician's license or identification card to meet state regulations.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of mathematics to instrumentation, such as ratio and proportions, numbers with power of 10’s, algebra equations, English-to-metric conversion, inches of water to PSI, inches of mercury to PSI, etc.
Understanding of pH and redox and equipment needed to measure them and be able to control the pH and redox of a liquid.
Understanding of steam and how it reacts to different situations, (e.g. saturation properties).
Understanding of fundamental principles of chemistry and physics required in instrumentation such as specific gravity, density of liquids and solids, mechanical advantages, proportions of liquids, melting points, freezing points, boiling points of liquids, etc.
Understanding of fundamental instrumentation loops and how they function as a loop, and what the function of each component part is in each type of loop.
Understanding of common types of chemical plant process equipment such as distillation columns, heat exchangers, boilers, turbines and compressors.
Ability to apply the procedures for measuring pressure level, flow, temperature, weight, density, heat flux, humidity and moisture, etc.

Responsibilities

Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair electrical, controlling, indicating, and measuring instrument devices.
Ensure specified operating performance of instruments and devices.
Read and understand manuals, wiring or instrumentation schematics, and testing specifications.
Troubleshoot electric motors and install wiring to circuits.
Layout, fabricate, and install tubing and tub trays.
Apply knowledge of mathematics to instrumentation, including ratio and proportions, powers of 10, algebra equations, and conversions.
Read blueprints, schematics, and loop drawings and prepare job reports.
Assemble and disassemble electronic process controls, pneumatic controls, and hydraulic systems and components.
Calibrate equipment using common calibration procedures and interpret/apply other procedures.
Understand and apply principles of pH and redox measurement and control.
Work with Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Law, and electrical components like diodes and capacitors.
Understand steam properties and reactions.
Apply principles of chemistry and physics relevant to instrumentation, such as specific gravity, density, and phase change points.
Troubleshoot and check out electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using test equipment.
Understand fundamental instrumentation loops and component functions.
Understand common chemical plant process equipment.
Apply procedures for measuring pressure, level, flow, temperature, weight, density, heat flux, humidity, and moisture.
Maintain current electrician's license or identification card.
Perform other duties as assigned.
