About The Position

Cherokee United Services is seeking a qualified Instrumentation Technician to support our client in Tuscaloosa, AL. The center supports the hydrologic data collection efforts of scientists in all 50 States, Puerto Rico and several other U.S. Territories. Hydrologic scientists and technicians measure and monitor streamflow, ground water levels and water quality at thousands of locations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of hydrologic data collection and instrumentation
  • Ability to work with databases and procurement systems
  • Customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders
  • Mechanical and electronic troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with testing, evaluation, and calibration of data acquisition systems
  • Experience in hydrology, electronics, mechanics, or a related field
  • Experience with hydrologic instruments and equipment development and maintenance
  • Must live within 35 miles of Tuscaloosa, AL
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing, evaluation, and calibration activities related to water quality monitors and sensors, and other water quality equipment, water-level sensors, flow measuring sensors including mechanical velocity meters, flumes, and acoustic Doppler systems, and data acquisition and telemetry systems.
  • Perform duties related to the testing, evaluation, and calibration of data acquisition systems such as dataloggers and telemetry systems. Other duties, include but are not limited to: providing technical assistance to field personnel, maintaining appropriate test and laboratory records, entering testing records and charges in the SAP B1 system or other databases, contacting vendors, contractors, or manufacturers to obtain information to aid testing of equipment, and resolving testing and equipment problems.
  • Perform all duties related to the testing, evaluation, and calibration of water level sensors such as pressure sensors, radars, and encoders and other related electronic instrumentation. Other duties include but are not limited to providing technical assistance to field personnel, maintaining appropriate test and laboratory records, entering testing records and charges in the SAP B1 system or appropriate database; contacting vendors, contractors, or manufacturers to obtain information to aid testing of equipment, and to resolve testing and equipment problems.
  • Inspect, test and verify calibration of sensors and related equipment used for hydrologic measurement. This equipment includes flumes, weirs, mechanical velocity meters, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), Acoustic Doppler Velocity Meters, and radars. The contractor shall also perform duties such as, but not limited to: maintaining appropriate test and calibration facilities; setting up test equipment, programs, and facilities including the tow tank, jet tank, tilting flume, FlowTracker test tank, and ADCP test flume. Contract personnel also perform preliminary data analysis, assist other engineers to use hydraulic lab equipment and collect data; verify the use of standard operating procedures and assist in development of new procedures. Contractors also provide technical support, assistance, and laboratory management to customers on an “as needed” basis. This may include providing estimates regarding labor and material requirements, performing monthly equipment maintenance and maintain associated files; inspecting and rebuilding current meters to client standards; providing technical assistance to field personnel; fabricating and repairing facility equipment and fixtures.
  • Perform all duties related to the testing, evaluation, and calibration of data acquisition systems such as dataloggers and telemetry systems such as Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) data collection. The contractor shall also perform duties, such as but not limited to: providing technical assistance to field personnel, maintaining appropriate test and laboratory records, entering testing records and charges in the SAP B1 system or other database; contacting vendors, contractors, or manufacturers to obtain information to aid testing of equipment and to resolve testing and equipment problems; providing technical assistance to field personnel; maintaining appropriate test and laboratory records; entering testing records and charges in the SAP B1 system or appropriate database; contacting vendors, contractors, or manufacturers to obtain information to support testing and to resolve testing and equipment problems.
  • Perform quality assurance inspections and tests on incoming warehouse stock to ensure that the equipment meets the performance specifications required by the client.
  • Perform activities associated with evaluation of new equipment and instruments. Equipment and instrument evaluations usually involve testing in environmental chambers or at field sites. The contractor shall perform various duties such as but not limited to preparing test plans; setting up test equipment, test jigs, environmental chambers, equipment programs, and facilities; preliminary data analysis, and preparing written reports on the results of evaluations and testing procedures.
  • Perform other quality assurance inspections and tests related to the ADCP, FlowTracker, National Ground Water Tape Calibration, and Mechanical Meter Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
