Instrumentation and Controls Engineer II

BLUE ORIGINVan Horn, TX

About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight. As part of Engines Advanced Programs, We are seeking a skilled and motivated Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join our test operations team. In this hands-on role, you will be at the heart of engine test operations — designing, integrating, and maintaining the instrumentation and data systems that make safe, high-fidelity testing possible. You will work cross-functionally with engineers and technicians to ensure test stands are instrumented, calibrated, and ready for critical test events.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in Instrumentation or Data Systems and Controls role
  • Experience in electrical schematic and panel layout design using CAD (AutoCAD Electrical preferred)
  • PLC programming experience (Allen Bradley experience a plus)
  • Proven ability to integrate instrumentation with data acquisition hardware
  • Proficiency with electrical diagnostic equipment
  • Familiarity with industrial sensors and actuators: pressure transducers, thermocouples/RTDs, LVDTs, accelerometers, motor controllers, flow meters, relays, strain gauges, valves, and pumps
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, both technical and non-technical
  • Self-starter with a drive to take ownership of projects end-to-end
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with video monitoring systems (webcam, 3G-SDI, high-speed, infrared)
  • Understanding of network configuration and IT fundamentals
  • Software development or troubleshooting experience with PLC, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or Opto22 controllers; LabVIEW or MATLAB applications
  • Familiarity with Allen Bradley or Bustec hardware
  • Knowledge of calibration principles (uncertainty analysis, total error ratios) and industry standards (ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI NCSL Z540.3)
  • Expertise in noise reduction, shielding, grounding, signal termination, and analog/digital filtering for high-fidelity measurements
  • Ability to specify instrumentation wiring for diverse sensor and data system interfaces
  • Experience designing and installing instrumentation and control systems in hazardous environments per NFPA 70 Article 500 (Class I, Division 1 & Division 2)
  • Programming proficiency in one or more languages: LabVIEW, Python, C++, Java, or HTML

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and upgrade test stand data acquisition systems: assemble, configure, validate, and troubleshoot DAQ hardware
  • Provide technical support for test stand instrumentation; produce and maintain drawings for harnesses, interfaces, electrical power, and data/control systems; mentor and train technicians and engineers
  • Define, coordinate, and execute instrumentation, data, and controls integration activities — including design, review, fabrication, installation, and functional checkout of wire harnesses, components, and sensors
  • Create and maintain software configuration files, test scripts, test procedures, and relevant engine test procedure sections
  • Monitor data during live test operations and provide real-time input on test sequence execution, test article health, and readiness for critical test phases
  • Review instrumentation health and performance by analyzing hot fire test data, developing and maintaining data reduction code, and compiling technical reports
  • Support test article and test stand operations to collect hot fire test data, and perform other duties as needed to maintain an efficient and effective work environment
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities that advance workplace safety, support fast-paced schedules, and generate cost savings
