About The Position

Redtree is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to support the design and development of process, plant, and building control systems for distributed generation and district energy projects, including electric, steam, chilled water, hot water, and cogeneration facilities. This role supports I&C engineering activities across the project lifecycle, from front-end design through detailed design, procurement support, and commissioning, on both EPC and traditional Design-Bid-Build (DBB) projects. This is a strong opportunity for an engineer early in their I&C career to build broad, hands-on experience across control system design, instrumentation engineering, and field support, under the guidance of senior discipline leads.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Possess a working knowledge of instrumentation, controls, and automation system design principles.
  • Have experience supporting or developing P&IDs, loop diagrams, instrument data sheets, wiring diagrams, or control system documentation.
  • Are familiar with PLC, DCS, SCADA, or industrial automation systems.
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a technical problem-solving environment.
  • Possess strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Are willing to travel to project and construction sites as needed (approximately 20%).
  • Have or can obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Can work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Must be able to work in the United States without employer sponsorship, now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, or related degree, from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 2-6 years of relevant design engineering experience; EPC project experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of instrumentation and control system design principles.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to work methodically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Willingness to travel to project/construction sites as needed (20% estimated).
  • Experience developing or reviewing P&IDs, loop diagrams, and instrument data sheets.

Responsibilities

  • Support I&C engineering activities across project phases, including front-end design, detailed design, procurement, construction, and commissioning support.
  • Assist with the development of control system architecture, I/O lists, control narratives, logic diagrams, and cause and effect diagrams for DCS and/or PLC systems.
  • Support instrumentation design deliverables, including instrument lists, data sheets, specifications, installation details, and location plans.
  • Support development of wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and interconnection drawings.
  • Coordinate with process and mechanical engineering teams on the development of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Perform instrumentation engineering calculations and sizing, including control valves, flow measurement devices, and thermowells, under senior engineer review.
  • Support selection of instrumentation for process variables such as pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analytical measurements.
  • Support process safety activities, including Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies and design reviews.
  • Assist with procurement support activities, including technical specifications, RFQ documentation, and vendor submittal review.
  • Support field investigations, site visits, and data collection efforts for new and existing facilities.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to support an integrated design approach.
  • Contribute to technical reports, studies, and documentation for internal and client use.

Benefits

  • 100% remote work, U.S.-based, with no relocation or office requirement.
  • 100% employer-sponsored benefits.
  • Direct exposure to the full project lifecycle, from concept through construction and commissioning, rather than a narrow phase or discipline silo.
  • A growing, entrepreneurial engineering team partnering with industry-leading clients on mission-critical facilities, power systems, and complex infrastructure.
  • Multiple openings across Mid to Senior levels, with the flexibility to match title and compensation to the selected candidate's experience.
