About The Position

This is a temporary position for the 2026-2027 school year. The teacher in Somerville Public Schools is responsible for the safety, care, and well-being of students, understanding child and youth development, and providing opportunities for learning and social-emotional development. They must uphold high expectations for every student, recognize individual strengths and needs, and utilize differentiated instruction to ensure equitable access to the curriculum. The role involves maintaining a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment, communicating with families, and collaborating with colleagues to support music programming and student success.

Requirements

  • Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Educator's license in the field or subject for this position.
  • DESE SEI endorsement required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instrumental strings instruction to students in grades 3–12 in accordance with district curriculum and instructional goals.
  • Develop and implement engaging lessons that support musical growth, technical proficiency, and performance readiness.
  • Prepare students for school-based and district-wide performances, including Winter Concerts, Spring Concerts, and Spring String Fling.
  • Distribute, collect, inventory, and assist in the maintenance and storage of district-owned string instruments.
  • Instruct students on proper instrument care, handling, and maintenance.
  • Identify instruments requiring repair or replacement and coordinate referrals as needed.
  • Select and distribute developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive string repertoire.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and respect.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, classroom expectations, behaviors, and upcoming performances.
  • Maintain accurate student records, attendance, and instructional documentation as required by the district.
  • Collaborate with music department staff, school administrators, and district personnel to support music programming and student success.
  • Recommend students for participation in enrichment opportunities, including Berklee City Music, private lessons, and similar programs.
  • Maintain a professional online presence, including a classroom or program website, to support communication and instructional resources.
  • Support district initiatives related to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the K–12 Supervisor of Music or building administration.
