About The Position

The Instrument Tech devises, selects, sets up, and operates electronic instrumentation and related electromechanical or electrohydraulic apparatus used for operational and environmental testing of mechanical, structural, or electrical equipment. This role translates test data for engineering personnel to formulate engineering design and evaluation decisions. The technician will select, install, calibrate, and check sensing, telemetering, and recording instrumentation and circuitry, and develop specifications for nonstandard apparatus according to engineering data, characteristics of equipment under test, and capabilities of procurable test apparatus. The role also involves sketching and building or modifying jigs, fixtures, and instruments and related apparatus, and verifying dimensional and functional acceptability of devices fabricated by craft or technical personnel. Performing preventive and corrective maintenance of test apparatus and peripheral equipment is also a key responsibility. The technician will install or direct technical personnel in the installation of units in test chambers or other test facilities. They will operate test apparatus during test cycles to produce, regulate, and record effects of actual or simulated conditions, such as vibration, stress, temperature, humidity, pressure, altitude, and acceleration. Analyzing and converting test data to usable form, using mathematical formulas, and preparing graphs and written reports to translate test results are also part of the role. The technician may plan test programs and may use computerized equipment and software to perform testing functions and produce graphs. The role may be designated according to equipment tested as Rocket-Control Technician; or according to nature of test as Environmental-Research Test Technician; Vibration Technician.

Requirements

May require a high school diploma or its equivalent and previous years of experience in the field or in a related area.
Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
Works under immediate supervision.
Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment.
Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
