About The Position

TRC is seeking an Instrument Person to operate and maintain survey instrumentation for various low-tech activities. This role involves collecting survey data, working closely with the Survey Party Chief, and assisting in the implementation of project survey policies and procedures. The Instrument Person will also orient survey personnel, monitor performance, and help resolve issues that may impact project completion. The position requires adherence to TRC's guidelines for field surveys, processing survey data, and maintaining survey instrumentation.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of surveying experience.
  • Previous Instrumentman experience required.
  • Knowledgeable in the electronic data collection methods of cross-country pipeline surveying.
  • Knowledge of survey instrumentation operating procedures and survey data collection techniques.
  • Good oral communication skills.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely to prepare reports, field notes, specifications, and correspondence.
  • Basic mathematical skills to support technical and administrative analysis (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry).
  • Effective problem-solving skills, especially when dealing with conflicting personalities.
  • Creativity, foresight, and mature judgment to identify potential problem areas and effect solutions.
  • Good working knowledge of TRC project operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to travel as dictated by job requirements.
  • Proficiency in PC operation, including spreadsheet and word processing programs.
  • Must pass pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age to apply.
  • Ability to walk 2-10 miles per day while carrying supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to clear line with a machete, brush axe, or chain saw.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • Global Positioning Systems (GPS) knowledge preferred.
  • ACSM Survey Technician Certificate preferred.
  • Experience in database operations and the use of engineering programs preferred.
  • Willingness to relocate to domestic or foreign locations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain survey instrumentation for low-tech activities such as profile surveys, line locations, Pipeline Re-stake, Line Clearing, Line Locating, Loop Line Setup, and River/Road Crossings.
  • Perform assigned surveying activities including turning angles, shooting distances, and collecting necessary survey data.
  • Work closely with the Survey Party Chief to execute survey work and methods.
  • Assist Survey Party Chief in implementing project survey policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Orient assigned survey personnel on project requirements and assign tasks.
  • Monitor survey personnel performance and documentation to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance.
  • Guide, coach, or motivate survey personnel to meet project schedules, budgets, and objectives.
  • Assist Survey Party Chief in resolving survey performance issues with clients and landowners.
  • Implement the written plan for the execution of survey activities, including scope, schedule, budget, organization, and required resources.
  • Request assignment of personnel and equipment needed for survey activities.
  • Orient survey personnel on project planning, policies, safety, and quality assurance.
  • Assign tasks to survey personnel and explain documentation requirements.
  • Provide and explain the proper completion, distribution, and timing for survey forms, documents, records, and reports.
  • Monitor survey personnel's performance, documentation, conduct, work ethics, and interactions.
  • Evaluate performance and provide guidance, coaching, motivation, or discipline as necessary.
  • Monitor overall survey tasks for compliance with project requirements.
  • Identify changes in work scope, schedule completion, or budgeted costs and implement necessary actions.
  • Document required changes in schedules and budgeted costs.
  • Monitor documentation control and filing systems for easy storage and retrieval.
  • Communicate with the Survey Party Chief to report survey progress and issues.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to survey personnel regarding documentation, progress tracking, cost tracking, time and expense reporting, and document control.
  • Implement project requirements for safety, emergency response, and related documentation.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of complete documentation for all survey activities into a project completion package.
  • Maintain Field Notes as outlined in the TRC Guidelines for Field Surveys.
  • Perform assigned survey activities and make surveying adjustments for obstructions.
  • Process survey data.
  • Interface with the Survey Party Chief for survey data translation during the development of preliminary alignment maps and plats.
  • Assist in the indoctrination of survey personnel regarding company and project survey procedures.
  • Maintain and operate survey instrumentation throughout the data collection process.
  • Assist the Survey Party Chief with assigned project survey activities and assume leadership in their absence.
  • Perform assigned survey instrumentation operations activities and take first-line responsibility for collected survey data.
  • Ensure company and project surveying procedures are properly implemented for quality survey work.
  • Report to the Survey Party Chief for interpretation of the TRC Guidelines for Field Surveys.
  • Assist in the indoctrination of survey personnel regarding company and project survey procedures during the initiation of survey work.
