About The Position

The Sociology Department at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking up to two part-time, non-tenure stream instructors to teach multiple courses per term in the College of General Studies. These positions are for online, asynchronous instruction. The Fall semester begins August 15, 2026. Courses include multiple sections of SOC 0460 RACE AND ETHNICITY and SOC 0477 MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY, plus a section each of SOC 1450 HEALTH AND ILLNESS and SOC 0475 SOCIOLOGY OF AGING. The undergraduate program aims to teach diverse students to apply sociological analysis to understand various social phenomena. The department values flexible teachers who can engage students in active learning and particularly seeks candidates who can "fire students’ sociological imaginations."

Requirements

  • MA in Sociology or closely adjacent interdisciplinary field
  • Experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant
  • Experience teaching undergraduates using digital instructional platforms/learning management systems for remote, online, or distance teaching.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Sociology or similarly appropriate discipline in hand at time of appointment
  • Experience as an instructor of record teaching a course at the college level
  • Demonstrated excellence in multiple instructional modalities
  • Experience with remote, online, or distance teaching and online course development
  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative pedagogical practices
  • Experience working with, and/or commitment to, non-traditional students and their needs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach as instructor of record one or two online, asynchronous courses per semester.
