About The Position

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Instructor to conduct cutting-edge Down syndrome research in the laboratory of Dr. Joaquin Espinosa. The ultimate goal is to significantly improve the quality of life for individuals living with trisomy 21. This position requires extensive experience in immunological and experimental techniques, with a heavy emphasis on new approach methodologies (iPSCs, Organoids, Gene editing) and primary human biospecimens. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a related field, relevant laboratory experience, and an exceptional scientific research record. The instructor will join a multidisciplinary team in a highly collaborative environment, focusing on understanding aberrant interferon signaling and immune dysregulation in the context of Down syndrome and other biology, including assay design, optimization, data analysis, and follow-up studies. The role also involves training and supervising junior personnel and applying for NIH grants. The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, an independent and critical thinker, a meticulous experimentalist, a team player, and able to multitask in an interactive setting, while maintaining accurate and complete records of all scientific experiments, drafting technical reports and manuscripts, and presenting work as needed.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a related field such as Cellular Biology from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • At least 2 of the years should be at a Ph.D. level applying experimental design using induced pluripotent stem cells and organoids.
  • Extensive experience in immunological and experimental techniques with a heavy emphasis on new approach methodologies (iPSCs, Organoids, Gene editing) and primary human biospecimens.
  • Experience in training and supervising junior personnel.
  • Experience in applying for NIH grants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both to colleagues and to the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and mentor graduate students, postdoctoral scientists and junior team members.
  • Ability to independently and collaboratively drive research projects to completion.
  • Ability to assemble, revise, and successfully publish scientific manuscripts.
  • Ability to present scientific findings at meetings and conferences.
  • Ability to design and write funding applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive scientific collaborations.

Nice To Haves

  • In-depth knowledge flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, Cytometry by Time-of-Flight technologies.
  • A deep understanding of collecting, processing, storing a diverse range of unique immune cell types.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical principles relevant to biomedical research.
  • Proven ability to contribute to publication of scientific manuscripts.
  • Expertise in immunology or other fields relevant to Down syndrome pathobiology.
  • Experience in Down syndrome research.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, operate troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment and multi-task effectively in the laboratory.
  • A demonstrated proclivity towards improving processes and delivering practical solution.

Responsibilities

  • Design, carry-out and supervise the execution of experimental procedures.
  • Hire, train, and manage junior team members on proper laboratory operations.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior team members in data management, analysis, visualization, and interpretation.
  • Apply biological expertise to interpret results and extract meaningful conclusions to serve the mission of the Crnic Institute.
  • Lead, as well as support, writing of manuscripts, abstracts, reports, and other publications.
  • Contribute to the development of grant/contract proposals, study designs and execution of those study designs.
  • Develop research protocols, including compliance with ethical guidelines for human and animal research.
  • Present results at local, national and international conferences.
  • Keep accurate and complete records of all scientific experiments.
  • Draft technical reports and manuscripts and present work as needed.
