About The Position

The mandate of the Safety, Regulatory, Training and Development Service is to provide training and development, safety and regulatory compliance, and quality and continuous improvement of bus, para transit and light rail services. Services and programs include appropriate safety and job training for transit employees, and the compliance, development and implementation of safety standards to protect the general public. You are responsible for designing and performing training programs that will foster employees' workplace performance, comply with health and safety workplace standards, and align with the core values for Transit Fleet & Facilities Maintenance Branch and OC Transpo. You maintain close liaison with Occupational Health & Safety Branch and keep current on all applicable federal and provincial legislation, evaluate training needs, and participate in the development of annual training plans and maintaining staff training records. You qualify and certify Transit Fleet & Facilities Maintenance Branch employees on various vehicle systems and equipment to comply with policies, procedure, best practices and safety standards. Review potential threats/hazards, help create countermeasures to minimize potential risks, and assess the training needs of employees. As a subject matter expert, you lead and attend meetings to resolve gaps in process, must stay current with Nation Safety Code Standard 11, evaluate employee compliance, and otherwise help make each work area as safe as possible. The programs and techniques may vary depending on work area assigned. Adaptation of training is required.

Requirements

  • Valid Red Seal Qualification as a Truck and Coach Technician (310T)
  • Completion of Truck and Coach Technician apprenticeship program of 6720 hours
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience as a licensed Truck and Coach Technician (310T) which includes experience in a training, supervising or coaching position
  • Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service training certificate approved in Ontario
  • High Voltage Electric Vehicle Safety Instructor Qualification/Certification
  • Cummins Qualification Certificate
  • Level 1 & 2 ZF Transmission certificate
  • Allison Transmission certificate
  • 3M Preferred Graphics Installer
  • Wreckmaster Level 2/3 certification
  • Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as Truck and Coach Technician 310T
  • Must complete City training and obtain Ontario unrestricted CZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) within the timeframe determined by the employer, in order to operate a City of Ottawa bus
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
  • Must obtain Signing Authority under the MTO Driver Certification Program within the timeframe determined by the employer
  • Fleet Driver Trainer/Instructor certification (PRIDE or equivalent MTO-approved course)
  • Certified Defensive Driving Course Instructor
  • Certified Air Brake Instructor
  • Certificate in Adult Education
  • Current Ontario Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) certificate card
  • Good working knowledge of Federal and Provincial Regulations
  • City policies and procedures affecting Transit maintenance operations

  • Knowledge in developing learning solutions using emerging instructional technologies, including equipment to develop multimedia presentations
  • Knowledge of critical systems, such as: engine and transmission, axles and suspension, air conditioning, electrical systems, air brake systems, body and frame
  • Knowledge of building support systems
  • In-depth Knowledge of computers and electronics, electronic equipment, diagnostic equipment and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
  • Knowledge of job planning and parts/materials requisitioning/ warranty processing
  • Ability to work outside in inclement weather conditions, frequent mounting and dismounting of heavy equipment, travel regularly throughout the city.
  • Ability to organize and disseminate vast amounts of information to support new technologies, safe work practices within the transit organization

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.
  • The successful candidate will be required to complete an Enhanced Reliability Clearance to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.
  • A valid Ontario unrestricted CZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
