About The Position

The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department is responsible for building a healthy, inclusive and vibrant City, as well as ensuring that communities, residents and visitors have access to the recreation and cultural places, programs, events and services that allow them to experience all the benefits the City has to offer, and overseeing Buildings and Facilities Management for improved service delivery integration, ensuring the best possible client experience in City facilities. You are responsible for teaching specialized aquafitness programming to participants in a safe and enjoyable manner while following the guidelines of the certifying agency, and in accordance with corporate and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.

Requirements

• Completion of Grade 11.
• Current certifications from a recognized certifying organization (or equivalent as deemed acceptable by management).
• Minimum of 6 months of experience or equivalent apprenticeship.
• Aquafitness Instructor Specialty certification (CALA, YM-YWCA, WaterART or other recognized certification).
• Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates.
• AODA Accessibility/IASR Training.
• Knowledge of corporate and departmental policies, guidelines and directives.
• Knowledge of City of Ottawa emergency response procedures.
• Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
• Knowledge of specialty area, including but not limited to, demographic needs, goals and objectives and how to safely design and facilitate specialty fitness programs.
• Ability to handle the stress of an emergency situation.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Understanding of and ability to communicate using verbal and non-verbal cues.
• Ability to offer alternatives and options to participants.
• Understanding contraindications for specialty populations.
• Vibrant, energetic, motivating teaching style.
• Professional appearance and demeanour while on duty.
• Possess the physical capability to perform the ongoing duties of the position.

• Current National Lifeguard Pool certificate is an asset.
• Current Oxygen Therapy or LSS Airway Management certificate is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Teaching specialized aquafitness programming to participants in a safe and enjoyable manner.
• Following the guidelines of the certifying agency.
• Adhering to corporate and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
• Demonstrating all movement patterns and facilitating an active fitness class.
• Reporting to work in ample time to be ready at the start of their shift.
