About The Position

SOWELA Technical Community College is seeking an Instructor - Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator for the School of Nursing & Allied Health. This is an unclassified, faculty 9-month position, grant funded. The role involves teaching, direct instructional activities, service to students, department, division, and college, and professional development activities. The instructor will be responsible for preparing and delivering lab/simulation materials, collaborating with faculty to develop and refine simulation scenarios, overseeing the functioning and scheduling of labs, conducting high fidelity simulations, and maintaining lab equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing
  • Nursing experience of two years in the concentration hired to teach (Medical-Surgical, Maternal Child, Pediatrics, Mental Health).
  • Two years of full-time teaching experience in a nursing program.
  • Ability to use a computer for composing, storing, and retrieving information with Basic knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with patient care, students, other employees, and the public. This is normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, and handle or feel objects and controls.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations needed to grade and complete assignments.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize job duties to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and parties outside of the college.
  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve and make decisions effectively.
  • Models’ professional standards, including customer service, collaboration, communication, excellence, attendance, and related.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral degree in nursing.
  • One year of experience working with high-fidelity simulators and running high-fidelity simulations.

Responsibilities

  • Understands and adheres to all applicable Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) policies.
  • Understands and adheres to policies and procedures contained in the SOWELA Technical Community College (STCC) Faculty Handbook.
  • Understands and adheres to all laws pertaining to disclosure of student records.
  • Understands and adheres to the professional scope, standards, codes, rules and regulations of Professional Governing Bodies: American Nurses Association, Louisiana State Board of Nursing, Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners, Nurses Code of Ethics, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.
  • Prepares lab/simulation materials using evidence-based resources.
  • Organizes lab/simulation time to be accomplished in the allotted time.
  • Provides instruction to individual students and groups appropriate to the needs and requirements of activities being performed.
  • Attends labs on time and ensures alternate method of delivery is available for students if unable to attend.
  • Delivers content in a clear, concise manner that enhances student learning.
  • Demonstrates varied methods of content delivery and use of instructional aids.
  • Acts as a content expert in subject matter.
  • Promotes discussion among students as well as learning and individual initiative.
  • Provides constructive feedback in a timely manner on skills and simulation performance and documentation.
  • Provides fair grading of student course work.
  • Oversees students’ clinical practice in the clinical setting, on occasion if needed.
  • Collaborates with faculty to develop and refine simulation scenarios to achieve the course expected outcomes based on student and faculty needs.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and evaluates scenarios, simulated learning activities, and educational materials for all nursing courses in collaboration with nursing faculty.
  • Collaborates with faculty to provide consistent and relevant student learning experiences to meet course and clinical objectives in the nursing labs.
  • Assists students and faculty in meeting course objectives through the utilization of the simulation and skills lab.
  • Assists in the implementation of simulation standards and best practices and provides faculty with evidenced based guidelines to ensure positive and consistent learning experiences for students.
  • Oversees the functioning and scheduling of all Nursing Skills Labs and the High-Fidelity Simulation Labs.
  • Assists students upon faculty referral for skills lab remediation.
  • Conducts high fidelity simulations including the debriefing process, formative evaluation of student activity during the scenarios, and the effectiveness of simulation activities.
  • Provides feedback to students during simulation debriefing.
  • Supports staff and faculty during the planning and running of simulation events preparing, applications, props placement, and moulage set up to create a realistic healthcare setting.
  • Completes the physical set up and take down of a variety of healthcare simulation manikins and clinical lab environments with extreme attention to detail as assigned.
  • Creates and maintains a respectful and professional working environment, incorporating active learning, reflective thinking, and a confidential debriefing process.
  • Continuously updates and refines simulation experiences based on identified needs and to serve as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/lab activities.
  • Maintains office hours as required.
  • Submits reports and performs required record-keeping functions in a timely and dependable manner.
  • Participates in School of Nursing and Allied Health (SoNAH) monthly meetings and standing committees as assigned.
  • Accepts SoNAH service assignments such as recruiting, pinning and graduation activities.
  • Professionally represents the institution in college-related outreach activities.
  • May serve on advisory boards/committees.
  • May apply academic expertise in the local, state, or national community.
  • May sponsor student activities or groups.
  • Participates in workshops/seminars.
  • Assists students with advising and counseling activities related to academic, career and job placement areas.
  • Provides simulation training and practice for faculty at all instructional sites. Travel to each site may be required on occasion.
  • Orients instructors in lab procedures, location and use of materials, and operation of equipment.
  • Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies used in the simulation and skills lab.
  • Ensures inventory levels are maintained in a cost-effective way.
  • Works with the Nursing Simulation Technician and equipment companies to monitor and perform routine minor maintenance and repair on all lab equipment to ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Provides recommendations for budgeting and purchase of equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Maintains a record of new equipment and of repairs required and completed.
  • Assists with special projects, tours or initiatives as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Attends conferences, seminars and workshops that enhance expertise in areas of teaching responsibilities.
  • Participates in professional organizations.
  • Acts as a role model for nursing students.
  • Develops and maintains professional and collegial relationships.
  • Communicates on professional matters with media, government agencies and other professional bodies when asked and coordinated through Institutional Advancement.
  • Engages in collaboration and participates in delivery of simulation experiences with LSUHSC residency program.
