About The Position

North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM) is a world-class public high school with statewide reach, offering a tuition-free residential program for juniors and seniors in Durham and Morganton, an online supplementary honors program, and virtual daytime Connect courses. NCSSM also provides a wide array of summer offerings for rising fifth- through 12th-graders. Specializing in science, technology, engineering, and math, while also embracing the fine arts and humanities, NCSSM has become a model for similar specialized schools globally since its founding in 1980. The Humanities Department fosters collaboration across departments and divisions, supporting community-engaged service and research. This temporary, part-time, EHRA Faculty position (0.25 FTE, 10 hrs/wk) reports to the Fine Arts Chair and is responsible for in-person instruction in Orchestra and string instrumental music at the Morganton campus. Duties may extend to Music Theory, Piano and Guitar, Music History, or other music electives. The instructor will serve as the artistic director and conductor for the NCSSM Morganton String and Symphony Orchestra, selecting and rehearsing repertoire, and directing performances. They will be a primary resource for students advancing in string instrumental performance and are expected to facilitate student involvement in NCMEA and other honor events. The role involves maintaining/establishing contacts with community groups for collaborative artistic efforts, coordinating with other Fine Arts faculty and local musical organizations, and supporting the overall music curriculum through instruction and curriculum development. The position also offers opportunities to develop and lead intensive learning experiences during NCSSM’s “January-Term” and potentially lead student travel groups.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Music Education or Music Performance, or related field.
  • Teaching experience, preferably with advanced high school students.
  • Strong background in string and orchestral music pedagogy.
  • Well-developed skills in conducting and rehearsal strategy.
  • Experience with guitar and/or piano.
  • Interest in outreach and commitment to the greater music education community in North Carolina and beyond.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Ability to develop and lead January-Term sessions on specialized topics.
  • Proof of degree conferral by the hire date if currently pursuing a degree.

Responsibilities

  • Providing in-person instruction in Orchestra and string instrumental music.
  • Providing instruction in Music Theory, Piano and Guitar, Music History, or other music elective courses.
