About The Position

SOWELA is seeking an Instructor - Mathematics / Math Tutor for the School of Arts & Sciences within Academic Affairs. This is an unclassified, 9-month faculty appointment. The role involves utilizing approved curriculum, developing course objectives, and ensuring content is current. The instructor will maintain accurate classroom records, support department assessment initiatives, and use the required course management system. Key responsibilities include meeting deadlines for student work, providing high-quality academic support through tutoring, preparing for sessions, reviewing materials, and encouraging student independence and critical thinking. The instructor will maintain a professional and supportive learning environment, be punctual, conduct sessions efficiently, treat students with respect, provide constructive feedback, and communicate concerns to supervisors. Additionally, the role involves promoting tutoring services and student engagement by collaborating with Math faculty and Student Services staff, participating in campus events, and increasing awareness of available resources. The instructor will also manage student check-in/check-out procedures, safeguard student confidentiality, and prepare end-of-semester reports assessing tutoring participation and student grade outcomes. Other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in mathematics; or a master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in mathematics is required.
  • Applicants must meet credentialing guidelines for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
  • All positions require superior communication skills, the ability to relate to students, other faculty, and college staff, and the ability to handle a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • The successful applicant will be a team player, have strong leadership skills, and possess a high-energy level and a positive attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • The ability to assist students with college-readiness skills is desired.
  • Experience in post-secondary teaching is preferred.
  • Experience in distance-learning is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching hybrid and/or compressed video courses is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the approved curriculum. Develops clearly stated course objectives and learning outcomes. Ensures the objectives and content of the courses taught are current.
  • Keeps accurate classroom records.
  • Supports department assessment initiatives.
  • Uses and updates the required course management system.
  • Meets deadlines and evaluates student work on time, including submitting Show/No Show reports, midterm grades, and final grades.
  • Provides high-quality academic support by preparing for tutoring sessions, reviews course materials and tutoring goals, utilizes effective learning strategies, and encourages student independence, critical thinking, and academic success.
  • Maintains a professional and supportive learning environment by being punctual, conducts sessions efficiently, treats students with respect, provides constructive feedback, and communicates concerns or scheduling changes to supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Promotes tutoring services and student engagement by collaborating with Math faculty and Student Services staff to conduct classroom visits, participate in campus events, increase awareness of available resources, and encourage student participation in tutoring programs.
  • Ensures program effectiveness and accurate records by managing student check-in/check-out procedures, safeguards student confidentiality, and prepares end-of-semester reports that assess tutoring participation and related student grade outcomes.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.
