About The Position

This is a tenure-track, full-time, permanent, 11-month position at Honolulu Community College, beginning approximately August 2026. The role involves working with faculty and administration to improve academic pathways, programs, and courses delivered through various modalities including flipped, hybrid, hyflex, and distance learning. The position requires on-site presence and may involve evening, weekend, and off-campus assignments, potentially requiring a Department of Defense security clearance for work on military bases. The role also includes adapting course materials, promoting Open Education Resources, developing and monitoring evaluation processes for accreditation standards (Regular and Substantive Interaction - RSI), and contributing to the distance education strategic plan. The position supports campus and system-wide distance education initiatives, conducts needs assessments, assists student support services, and collaborates with colleagues to produce training materials. Related activities include facilitating faculty orientations, participating in committees, and maintaining professional development.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Learning Design and Technology, Instructional Technology, Instructional Design and Technology, Instructional Design and Development, Educational Communication and Technology, Instructional Systems Technology, or Learning Experience and Design.
  • Degrees and credits must be earned from regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary colleges and universities recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and met by the effective date of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years teaching courses via distance modalities.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in planning and implementing, and managing policies and procedures for distance education, the instructional design process and its integration and development of distance delivered courses.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of all community college students.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards and accessibility standards as it relates to distance education.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, multi-task, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to use and teach on both Mac and PC platforms.
  • Experience and knowledge in the development and use of mediated instructional strategies; the design and production of digital media materials; the development of workshop training, computer-aided training, and instructional modules.
  • Experience teaching at the community college-level especially in a distance education environment.
  • Familiarity with competency-based instruction, behavioral objectives, and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability in curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with campus constituents including but not limited to faculty and administration to initiate and improve academic pathways, programs and courses delivered via various flipped, hybrid, hyflex and distance modalities.
  • Provides pedagogical and technical support to faculty in the design, development, and maintenance of courses delivered via various distance modalities.
  • Collaborates with faculty, professional staff, administration, and students to promote distance education programs/classes/ initiatives.
  • Plans, develops, and delivers professional development programs for faculty and staff that will build capacity for employees to meet existing and perceived technological and pedagogical training needs.
  • Works closely with instructors to adapt course materials appropriate to the mode of delivery.
  • Promote and assist faculty in the development of Open Education Resources.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors evaluation processes and protocols to assist faculty teaching distance education courses in meeting accreditation standards for Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI).
  • Identifies RSI best practices and provide guidance to faculty on integrating them effectively into courses.
  • Continuously monitors, assesses, and improves distance education (DE) strategic plan for DE growth and development with alignment to Honolulu CC's overall strategic plan.
  • Coordinates and supports campus and systemwide distance education and instructional design initiatives.
  • Identifies emerging trends and conducts annual campus wide needs assessment/analyses as it relates to distance education (both instructional and non-instructional units).
  • Assist student support services in meeting online student needs and concerns in coordination with academic support, student services and related groups.
  • Collaborates with department colleagues to produce materials and training for the faculty, staff and the college to promote and or improve DE courses and delivery.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.
  • Facilitating a distance education orientation for faculty each semester.
  • Assisting in campus-related student activities.
  • Participating in faculty/administrative committees, community service, and in-service training.
  • Maintaining an approved program of professional self-improvement, collecting data and preparing reports, preparing/adapting/revising course objectives; independently planning, organizing, and carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  • Must be available for evening, weekend, and off-campus assignments (e.g., military bases.)
  • To teach on a military base, Department of Defense security clearance will be required.
