About The Position

Joplin Schools and Franklin Technology Center Adult Education is launching a new Behavior Technician Certificate Program for adult learners. The Instructor will design the curriculum, teach foundational behavioral principles and intervention techniques, conduct CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training, and provide field-based supervision to ensure hands-on experience. This role also includes working within Joplin Schools’ intensive programs to support staff and students with behavior planning, implementation, and data collection, requiring close collaboration with principals and district leadership.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in applied behavior analysis, psychology, special education, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of principles, ethics, and applied behavior analysis techniques, positive behavior support, and evidence-based interventions.
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges.
  • Experience teaching or training adult learners.

Nice To Haves

  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification strongly preferred.
  • Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) or other professional with demonstrable adequate skills and talents necessary for the program will be considered.
  • The chosen candidate will be required to become a CPI trainer. This training will be funded by the district.
  • Experience working with students in a public school setting or similar educational environment is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Support Joplin School District staff and students: Will support teachers, paraprofessionals, and behavior specialists and behavior interventionists within intensive programs within the Joplin School District.
  • Environmental planning
  • Behavior FBA/BIP development
  • Consultation with staff through problem-solving
  • Modeling implementation of programming and data collection with students
  • On-site training, support, and consultation within district programs
  • Collaboration with district leaders, program directors, and building principals.
  • Ongoing collaboration and systems development within the Joplin School District.
  • Supervising other professionals, such as BCaBA and RBTs, under the BCBA certification requirements of district and FTC staff when appropriate.
  • Program Development and Leadership - FTC Adult Education: Lead the creation and ongoing refinement of the Behavior Technician Certificate program curriculum, assessment methods and practical training components, course start dates and schedule, and program promotion.
  • Instruction: Provide engaging and comprehensive instruction to adult learners on topics derived from the RBT® curriculum and task lists. This includes, but is not limited to: Foundations of Behavior Analysis and Introduction to ABA in Schools.
  • Measurement: types of data, graphing, visual analysis.
  • Assessment: preference assessments, introduction to Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), ABC Data collection.
  • Skill Acquisition: Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT), Natural Environment Teaching (NET), task analysis, chaining, prompting, and fading.
  • Behavior Reduction: functions of behavior, replacement behaviors, proactive strategies, Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Ethics and Professional Conduct: RBT Code of Ethics, dual relationships, boundaries, confidentiality, FERPA.
  • Documentation and Communication: daily logs, data sheets, reporting progress, communication with supervisors, teachers, and parents.
  • Behavior Skills Training (BST) components and application.
  • Cultural Responsiveness and Trauma-Informed Practices.
  • Collaboration in the school environment, including roles of team members and working within IEPs.
  • CPI Training: Serve as a certified CPI Trainer or obtain certification to provide mandatory CPI training as a core component of the program.
  • On-Site Support and Supervision: Travel to schools to conduct on-site observation and training with program participants during their field placements. Provide guidance and support for implementing behavior support strategies in real-world settings. Potentially conduct an initial visit early in the program and additional visits or virtual check-ins as needed.
  • Curriculum Alignment: Ensure program content aligns with relevant task lists (e.g., RBT®) while adapting for the certificate program format.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with building-level administrators and potentially school teams (SPED, Gen Ed, BCBA) during site visits to support student learning and integration.
  • Program Administration: Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and program activities. Manage program materials and resources.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with best practices, research, and ethical guidelines in applied behavior analysis and adult education. Maintain any required certifications (e.g., BCBA, CPI Instructor).
  • Compliance: Ensure all program activities conform to district and state guidelines. Safeguard confidential and/or sensitive information, complying with privacy rights.
