About The Position

This position is for a full-time Biology Instructor on a 9-month term contract at the Chattanooga State campus. The instructor will be responsible for teaching Introduction to Biology 1 and 2, and General Biology 1 and 2 courses. Classes may be scheduled during the day or evening, taught in various formats (online and on-ground), and at different locations, including off-campus sites and service area high schools. The role involves facilitating instruction, evaluating students, monitoring progress, utilizing the Learning Management System (LMS), assigning grades, maintaining records, counseling and advising students, working on student retention, and maintaining required classroom and office hours. The instructor will also contribute to course and curriculum development, engage in professional growth, provide service to students, the college, and the community, offer academic advising, and support holistic student well-being. The position also involves fiscal stewardship and embracing the college's organizational culture.

Requirements

  • An earned Master’s degree in Biology from a regionally accredited institution or a Master’s degree with 18 graduate semester hours in Biology.
  • Maintains a comprehensive grasp on the particular area(s) of academic study.

  • Demonstrates a high level of self-discipline and self-motivation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching additional Biology courses in the department including Environmental Science, Nutrition, Human Biology, Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology.
  • Previous community college teaching experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Introduction to Biology 1 and 2 & General Biology 1 and 2 courses.
  • Facilitate the classroom instructional process.
  • Evaluate students and monitor their progress.
  • Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Assign mid-term and final grades.
  • Maintain attendance and grade records.
  • Counsel and advise students regarding academic preparation and career goals.
  • Work to retain students.
  • Maintain required classroom and office hours.
  • Select texts, supplemental documents, supplies, and other learning resources, including Open Educational Resources (OER).
  • Develop supplemental instructional materials.
  • Use current technology in the preparation, creation, and delivery of instruction in accordance with the college’s digital accessibility policy.
  • Create and revise courses and/or curricula as needed.
  • Maintain updated course syllabi.
  • Remain current within field of assigned instruction, related occupational areas and technologies.
  • Acquire, maintain, and apply knowledge of current instructional methodologies and materials.
  • Attend scheduled college, divisional, and departmental professional development and in-service activities.
  • Participate in annual faculty evaluation process.
  • Respect the rights of students and access to educational opportunities.
  • Assist in recruitment, selection, orientation and evaluation of potential students.
  • Assist in formal and informal placement activities for employment and/or transfer to four-year institutions.
  • Support student activities.
  • Assist in recruitment and selection of college personnel as assigned.
  • Participate in accreditation, assessment, and performance funding processes.
  • Support and participate in college/division/department committees, organizations and/or task forces.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues.
  • Strengthen relationships between the college and the community through community outreach activities.
  • Attend required college, division, and department meetings.
  • Support the Academic Advising Center.
  • Stay current with the relevant Tennessee Transfer Pathways.
  • Participate in regular reviews of relevant Tennessee Transfer Pathways.
  • Assist with college-wide advising as needed.
  • Maintain familiarity with holistic support services for students outside the classroom.
  • Ensure that services and activities promote accessibility.
  • Structure student experiences to ensure relevance in academic, student life, and co-curricular activities.
  • Promote, support, and participate in student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Support the responsible fiscal stewardship of the funds allocated to the Science Department.
  • Embrace and promote the College's goals related to organizational culture and community.
  • Maintain an office environment that is open, inviting, and professional.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
