About The Position

The Spanish Enrichment Assistant Instructor for the City of Elgin is responsible for assisting the head preschool instructor in organizing, planning, and implementing a variety of activities for preschool-aged children. This role involves helping students participate in arts and crafts, music, movement, letters, numbers, free play, and basic pre-academic skills. The position reports directly to the Early Childhood Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Proficiency in Spanish required.
  • Certified in AED adult/child and infant CPR or obtained certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Have a minimum of 1 year of classroom experience working with children assisting an instructor in an Early Childhood program or related field.
  • Possess good communication skills and the ability to use good judgment under stress.
  • Maintain patience, flexibility, and the ability to cope with demands of working with young children.
  • Must be able to assist with helping children achieve program goals.
  • Reliable person with good work ethics.
  • A pleasant and enthusiastic demeanor a must.
  • Dependable and reliable with a good work ethic.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional availability preferred for summer camp programming and some evenings/weekends required for preschool family events.

Responsibilities

  • Work in accordance with established City of Elgin Parks and Recreation Department policies, emergency procedures, and safety guidelines, and represent the City of Elgin in a positive, professional manner.
  • Work cooperatively with Head Instructor in supervising preschool children and implementing lesson plans and activities.
  • Assist the Head Instructor in helping with crafts, circle time, and room clean up, supervising play indoors and outdoors, and keeping the classroom calendar.
  • Ensure that the classroom is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Follow all safety procedures provided by the City of Elgin and provide a safe environment for the children.
  • Report accidents, injuries or safety hazards to Head Instructor.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of all information received in connection with this position.
  • Maintain a good public image and serve as a role model to children.
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of class to prepare.
  • Assist in record keeping and keep attendance information current.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, team members, and City of Elgin staff.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations and use good judgment under stress.
  • Ability to follow verbal directions from the Head Instructor and Early Childhood Supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
