About The Position

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a nine-month position at the level of instructor or non-tenure track assistant professor of teaching specializing in instruction of video arts production in the School of Media & Communication within the College of Arts and Sciences to begin Fall 2026. Applications are welcome from those with professional experience and/or teaching experience in video production with an emphasis on post-production. The successful candidate will inspire and mentor students, fostering their creative and technical skills in video storytelling and editing. The chosen candidate will teach four courses each semester, with primary responsibilities including basic video production, advanced post-production, production theory, and scriptwriting. Opportunity exists to work with the school's Student Media Center as well as a variety of other student organizations.

Requirements

  • Master's degree (MFA, MA, or equivalent) in communication, video production, media arts, film, or related field, with specialization in post-production, or 5 years of professional video production experience for appointment to instructor. A Ph.D. in communication or related field is required for appointment to assistant professor of teaching. The successful candidate must complete a Master's degree in communication or related discipline within five years of hire if one has not been completed previously.
  • Strong familiarity with video production software, including Adobe Premier Pro - Davinci Resolve knowledge is a plus.
  • Strong familiarity with video recording devices (e.g., DSLRs, dedicated video camcorders, and cinecameras) and principles of production design.
  • The ability to work with all groups/populations.
  • Expert familiarity with the Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Premier Pro and After Effects. Additional familiarity with Davinci Resolve is a plus.
  • Strong familiarity with video production hardware and production design.
  • Ability to instruct students across introductory and advanced courses.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in corporate, non-profit, and/or university settings.

Nice To Haves

  • At least seven years of related professional experience.
  • The ability to teach advanced courses in video production, including courses focusing on emerging media technology and the incorporation of artificial intelligence into content creation.
  • Prior experience with student media, campus news (e.g., broadcasts), or other production-focused student organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty and administration to advance video arts programs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working on hands-on experiential projects that engage students.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in the video arts program, with specific requirements to teach basic video production, advanced post-production, production theory, and scriptwriting.
  • Engage in student recruitment for the Media and Entertainment Arts program, as well as the School of Media & Communication.
  • Contribute to the mission of the school, college, university, and wider community through campus and professional service.
  • Co-advise student projects conducted through Digital Nest, a student-led group designed to encourage and coordinate creative media work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
