About The Position

The Instructor/Assistant Professor of Mass Communications with expertise in Public Relations will report to the Chair of the Mass Communications Department. This role involves teaching a range of public relations courses, including basics, PR writing, PR management and campaigns, social media applications, and data analytics. The position also requires the ability to integrate new technologies and AI into existing courses, and to develop new courses in areas such as Promotions, Social Influence, and Political, Sports, and Environmental Communications. Additional teaching may include digital media, public relations strategy, and campaigns. The candidate will advise the PRSSA chapter, lead the public relations concentration, and participate in departmental recruitment, committee service, grantsmanship, and research.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in communications related to Public Relations or a related field is required.
  • ABD will be considered.
  • Experience with multimedia journalism and/or strategic communication tools.
  • Experience with innovation teaching strategies and curriculum development.
  • Professional experience in journalism or public relations.
  • University level teaching experience in journalism or public relations.
  • Evidence of scholarly journalism or public relations research and potential for continued productivity.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Active involvement in relevant professional organizations (e.g. AEJMC, PRSA, NABJ).

Nice To Haves

  • A completed doctorate is required for a tenure track appointment and the rank of Assistant Professor.
  • Candidates should possess APR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Teach skills courses in the basics of public relations, PR writing, PR management and campaigns, social media applications, and data analytics.
  • Integrate new technologies and/or AI into existing Mass Communication courses.
  • Develop courses in Promotions, Social Influence and Political, Sports and Environmental Communications.
  • Teach other courses within the candidate’s areas of expertise such as digital media, public relations strategy, and campaigns.
  • Serve as advisor for the PRSSA chapter.
  • Lead the public relations concentration.
  • Participate fully in departmental recruitment activities.
  • Promote the department within the state and nationally.
  • Engage in committee service.
  • Conduct grantsmanship and research obligations consistent with all faculty.
