About The Position

The Writing Lab Instructional Specialist assesses writing competencies and develops individualized instruction for writing across the curriculum.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in English, writing, education, or related area AND one year of experience with individualized or group instruction/teaching; OR Bachelor’s degree in English, writing, education, or related area AND three years of experience with individualized or group instruction/ teaching; OR, An equivalent combination of higher education in English, writing, education, or related area AND three years of experience with individualized or group instruction/ teaching
  • Working knowledge of use of technology in a learning environment
  • Ability to work within policies and procedures of FVCC
  • Ability and willingness to serve as an ambassador for the College by interacting appropriately with the college community and community
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to maintain effective and positive professional relationships
  • Ability to follow and issue directions
  • Demonstrated communication, technology, presentation, customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students in writing skills through individualized instruction in the Writing Lab.
  • Reviews classroom assignments; consults with instructors in identifying needs of students in writing.
  • Cooperatively, with students, develops learning strategies to enhance competencies.
  • Develops resources (handouts, worksheets, web content) for the Writing Center and conducts writing workshops and classroom presentations.
  • Identifies barriers to student success and develops a plan to overcome barriers; monitors academic progress.
  • Provides classroom presentations and collaborates on development of marketing materials to promote services.
  • Remains current in practices, trends and research related to areas of assignments.
  • Monitors and tracks student attendance in the Writing Lab; recommends methods and policies for continuous improvement to supervisor.
  • Attends related trainings, workshops, and professional development.
  • Cross trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed.
  • Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the College.
  • Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment with colleagues and maintains effective working relationships.
  • Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Advances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing in the community in college-related activities.
  • May instruct writing courses as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Reports to the Dean of Student Success.
