About The Position

Under the direction of a licensed staff member, the Instructional Para Educator assists students individually and in small groups with basic curriculum work, programming, learning skills, and discipline procedures. The role also supports classroom teachers by preparing materials, monitoring students, and evaluating and recording student achievement. Work may involve students with behavioral challenges.

The position includes classroom support and basic clerical duties, as well as monitoring students during classroom and other activities. It may also involve assisting with field trips, fire drills, and other classroom events.

Requirements

• Meet one of the following: at least 48 hours of college credit, passing scores on the ParaPro test, or passing scores on the WorkKeys test. Documentation must be provided to Human Resources within 60 days of hire.
• Basic knowledge of typical office equipment, such as telephones, copiers, fax machines, and email.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Intermediate English language skills.
• Intermediate oral and written communication skills.
• Advanced interpersonal relations skills.
• Advanced organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and with others.
• Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work one-on-one and in small groups with students.
• Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.

Nice To Haves

• Associate’s degree.
• Experience working in a school district or educational setting.
• Experience working with school-age children, including children with behavioral challenges.
• For work in the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, basic bilingual skills and experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families.
• CPR and First Aid certifications.

Responsibilities

• Assist classroom teachers with preparing materials, administering tests, grading, attendance, paperwork, and documentation.
• Assist students with classroom activities and curriculum delivery, individually and in small groups, to support mastery of subjects.
• Monitor students and reinforce appropriate behavior during activities such as play, lunch, detention, in-school suspension, classroom time, and field trips.
• Perform basic classroom clerical work, including typing, stapling, filing, duplicating, taking inventory, scheduling repairs and maintenance, data entry, word processing, laminating, ordering supplies, placing phone calls, distributing materials, and light bookkeeping.
• Assist with classroom events such as field trips and fire drills as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
