About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Academic Technology, the Instructional Designer applies learning theories, instructional design principles, and user experience principles to create engaging learning experiences that support student success. Working collaboratively with faculty and subject matter experts, the Instructional Designer contributes to the Academic Technology team and supports engaging and effective online, hybrid, and face-to-face course delivery. This position designs, develops, and builds high-quality, accessible courses in the LMS. The Instructional Designer provides training of emerging technologies and supports faculty in the creation of course media. Flex work options available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regional accredited college or university in instructional technology, instructional design, education, digital media or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in course design and development, faculty training or technical support.
  • Demonstrated success in curriculum design and development, rubric creation, and strategies for effective assessments.
  • Familiarity with adult learning theory and instructional design methodologies.
  • Knowledge of course planning models, such as ADDIE and course mapping, and experience planning course design as well as building courses in an LMS.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and accessibility tools and requirements.
  • Knowledge of lecture and screen capture tools (Camtasia, Panopto, etc.).
  • Knowledge of video and audio editing tools (Panopto, Adobe Creative Suite applications, Audacity, etc.).
  • Knowledge of survey applications (Qualtrics).
  • Working knowledge of Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, etc.).
  • Ability to work in a team-orientated and collaborative community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse group or individual.
  • Excellent customer service skills, especially in helping and solving technology related questions with variety of technical applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize and meet deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an institution of higher education in instructional technology support, instructional design, or tech support a plus
  • Experience developing asynchronous training websites and materials a plus.
  • Experience with learning management systems, including Canvas and integrated technologies, including a working knowledge of HTML coding a plus.
  • Experience leading training sessions using a web conferencing tool (e.g. Zoom and Teams), developing courses in a course management system (Canvas) and utilizing web design tools (e.g. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, HTML) a plus.
  • Knowledge of attendance tools such as Canvas Roll Call and Qwickly a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Apply pedagogical learning theories, instructional design models, and best practices in online and other innovative teaching modalities to design and build instructional content in alignment with learning objectives.
  • Maintain project timelines for online course development, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborate with faculty on the pedagogical design and development of curriculum content and develop strategies to convert to online or hybrid environment.
  • Work with faculty to recommend, develop, and implement aligned learning assessments, rubrics, and testing strategies.
  • Assist faculty in developing reusable learning content (video, lecture capture, master or blueprint courses) that integrate into their courses.
  • Collaborate with team members and faculty to develop technology-enriched course materials using new and emerging instructional technologies, digital media, web-based technologies, etc.
  • Provide technical support for online course delivery in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.
  • Support the offering of ADA, Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 compliant content for all courses (i.e. ensure all videos, content, and graphics are properly developed with ADA and Section 508 guidelines).
  • Consult with faculty, instructional designers, and staff in selecting effective instructional strategies and specific technologies such as Canvas and Office 365 applications (OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, etc.), Qualtrics, Panopto, Adobe Creative Suite and other web-based academic technologies.
  • Assist faculty in effectively integrating advanced instructional technologies in online, hybrid and face-to-face courses.
  • Design, develop, and facilitate training workshops to introduce faculty and students to emerging instructional technologies and demonstrate effective application in teaching and learning.
  • Maintain faculty development training website by using the College’s Employment Management System hosted within Microsoft O365. This includes managing attendees and events, producing training reports, and facilitating the set-up of faculty development training events.
  • Create reference materials (help documents, how-to guides, videos, courses) that guide faculty, staff, and students in using the college’s Learning Management System and other related academic technologies.
  • Provide technical, help-desk support to faculty and students on a variety of technology applications.
  • Confidently research and obtain answers to technology issues (some advanced) related to Canvas, Office 365 applications (OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, etc.), Qualtrics, Panopto, Qwickly, Zoom, Adobe Creative Suite, and other web-based technologies.
  • Submit and maintain customer support tickets using Team Dynamix ticketing system.
  • Assist in testing new features and piloting emerging instructional technology solutions in conjunction with Information Technology and various other campus-wide departments.
  • Assist as system administrator for various technology applications, such as Canvas and Teams.
  • Remain current with evolving instructional technologies and trends, providing innovative and creative course design, development, and delivery options and services.
  • Engage with associations that deal with Instructional Design or Academic Technology, such as Educause, Quality Matters, Online Learning Consortium, Slate Group and other professional associations to keep abreast of best practices and current technologies.
  • Perform other related duties and/or responsibilities as assigned or required.
