About The Position

To assist, under the direction and supervision of certified personnel, in providing the best educational experience for all students. This role involves instructing individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the teacher. The Instructional Assistant participates as a member of an instructional team, developing appropriate relationships with team members, parents, and students. They are responsible for preparing and organizing lessons, monitoring and reporting student behavior, and performing routine clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials and maintaining records. The position also includes supporting the teacher by setting up work areas, operating equipment, and distributing supplies. The assistant will oversee students during activities, provide emotional support and guidance, and confer with teachers regarding student needs. Ensuring student health and safety through proper practices and regulations is crucial. The role involves directing group activities, assisting with supervision in various school settings, and participating in meetings and training. The Instructional Assistant acts in accordance with district and state policies and regulations, demonstrating loyalty and a positive attitude. Punctuality, preparedness, appropriate time utilization, and good attendance are expected. Familiarity with emergency procedures and crisis management is also required. Duties may include performing health services for which training will be provided. The position may involve other duties assigned by the principal or administrator.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate
  • Must have one of the following: associate degree, 48 college hours, or pass the KY Paraeducator exam
  • Must demonstrate competent language skills
  • Must demonstrate ability to work with children in an organized setting
  • Must participate in program training as specified by the Kentucky Department of Education and local district
  • Must meet the requirements of a criminal records check as specified by Kentucky State Law
  • Must meet health requirements as specified in district personnel policy
  • Knowledge of safe practices in classroom and playground activities
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Knowledge of operation of a computer terminal and data entry techniques
  • Knowledge of oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities
  • Ability to learn child guidance principles and practices
  • Ability to communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public, including members of diverse communities

Responsibilities

  • Instructs individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the teacher
  • Participates as a member of an instructional team; develops appropriate relationships with team members, parents, and students

  • Performs routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials; operates copy machines; maintains classroom records, maintains attendance records
  • Provides support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies
  • Assists in overseeing students while in activities; provides for supplies as necessary
  • Assists students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance
  • Confers, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs
  • Assures the health and safety of students by following health practices and regulations
  • Directs group activities of students as assigned; assists in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assists in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips
  • Participates in meetings and training programs as assigned
  • Assists certified persons in implementing all policies and regulations governing student conduct for the classroom and related school activities
  • Acts in accordance with the policies as set forth by the Breckinridge County Board of Education, KRS, KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations
  • Demonstrates loyalty, dedication, and a positive attitude toward the mission and goals of the Breckinridge County Schools
  • Is punctual and prepared for immediate assumption of duties upon arrival at school
  • Utilizes time appropriately and maintains good attendance
  • Is familiar with emergency procedures and crisis management and assists with implementation as necessary
