About The Position

The Instructional Assistant works under the supervision of a certificated teacher to support the education of individual and/or small groups of students. This role involves providing both instructional and clerical support within various school settings such as classrooms, libraries, lunchrooms, health rooms, and playgrounds. The primary goal is to assist teachers in the instructional process and ensure a safe and positive learning environment for students.

Requirements

  • Required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios.
  • Ability to read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others.
  • Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of concepts of grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of stages of child development and learning styles.

Nice To Haves

  • Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; or
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or
  • Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; or
  • Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.

Responsibilities

  • Administers tests, homework assignments, and make-up work to support teachers in the instructional process.
  • Assists students individually or in small groups with lesson assignments, reinforcing learning concepts and helping students achieve academic goals.
  • Attends meetings, in-service presentations, and trainings to acquire and convey job-related information.
  • Confers with teachers and/or parents to provide input on student progress and implement/modify student objectives.
  • Guides students in independent study for enrichment or remedial work to ensure student success.
  • Implements instructional programs and lesson plans under teacher supervision to improve students' academic success.
  • Maintains classroom resources, work areas, and student files/records, including adapting instructional materials.
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in various settings to identify needs and ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions such as copying, correcting papers, and completing attendance verifications.
  • Reports observations and incidents related to students to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel in implementing curriculum and teaching methodologies.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.
