About The Position

The job of Instructional Assistant- Special Programs Education Assistant- ASD Program is done for the purpose/s of facilitate the academic, social, and emotional growth of neurodiverse learners by providing structured behavioral support and tailored instructional accommodations and modifications; working collaboratively with special education teams, general education staff and behavioral specialists, this role implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and sensory regulation strategies to mitigate learning barriers, cultivate student strengths,and empower individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to achieve long-term independence and self-advocacy.

Requirements

  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems.
  • Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age appropriate activities; de-escalation and restraint training; stages of child development; health standards and hazards; Applied Behavioral Analysis and behavior modification; and safety practices and procedures.
  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
  • Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid; adhering to safety practices; understanding of, and the ability to utilize basic technology such as computers and devices; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes.

Responsibilities

  • Apply de-escalation strategies (e.g. seclusion, restraints, escorts, ) for the purpose of maintaining student(s) safety, privacy and dignity.
  • Assist and support students while using communication systems and assistive technology (e.g.augmentative and alternative communication (MC) devices, picture exchange systems (PEGS), ) for the purpose of expressing their needs and wants during participation in class and through interpersonal actions.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, trainings, and/or in-service presentations for the purpose of developing skills and establishing effective relationships with students with behavior, social and/or emotional needs.
  • Guide and model appropriate peer interactions (e.g.group work, unstructured times and skills instructional blocks, etc.) for the purpose of promoting meaningful inclusion.
  • Implements programming for students with behavior, social and/or emotional needs under direction of the teacher (e. behavioral plans, lesson plans, disciplinary actions, etc.) for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students' academic and life skill success through a defined course of study while meeting their educational and developmental needs.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality (e. student data, IEP documentation and behavioral records, etc.) for the purpose of adhering to FERPA, school district policies and ensuring student privacy.

  • Modify and adapt classroom assignments, materials and learning pacing under the direction of the special education teacher (e.g. math groups, providing proper examples, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, ) for the purpose of aligning the students development level and IEP goals.
  • Participate and coordinate collaboratively with a variety of professional groups (e. special education and general education teachers, district staff, student team members, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a unified implementation of student programming.
  • Recognize student characteristics for the purpose of proactively utilizing sensory tools, scheduled breaks and environmental adjustments to promote appropriate sensory and emotional regulation.
  • Scaffold techniques for the purpose of encouraging self-advocacy, task completion,and daily living skills to foster independence.
